So i've been out of the country for a couple of weeks visiting the HQ of my new company in Sarpsborg Norway. I was thinking perhaps I could have meet up with @deeaa in Sweden if I had a car but alas it was a very busy and fun trip. Got to spend a few days sightseeing and travelling, even got to visit the location of my original family farm from back in the 1850's. It was my first trip outside the US since evil covid days too so it was another first.

In the meantime I accumulated a couple of used Yairi guitars - one was a lucky grab from CG used and the other also a killer deal via reverb. My quest for Yairi's started from my fandom of Monte Montgomery, who plays a DY62C like the one below. Both of these guitars were part of the "signature" series Yairi put out in the mid 80's and both have cedar tops, burl mahogany back and sides, and ebony fingerboard/bridge.

The DY62C cutaway is a player grade guitar from 1988 - I grabbed it from a small shop in Michigan who did some work on it. It had a small top crack near the bridge, but they cleated/repaired and reglued the bridge and did a very nice job of it. Its got several dings and dents, but the action is super low and they did a very nice job on the frets and it plays like a dream. The bi-phonic electronics even function, these are becoming harder and harder to find.

The DY61 (1994) is the slope shoulder/non electronic version series and this one was a GC used score. I think it sat in a case for a very long time as it's just about mint cosmetically. Frets need a little work but it was priced significantly lower than market value and it's in overall very good shape.

Certainly - still sorting through them all and still fighting off a bit of jetlag, it's a lot worse on the way back than on the way there

Here's a few.

Most of the time I spent there was working, but I was there over a 3-day weekend and one of my co-workers who is incredibly gracious took me on several trips - to Oslo one day, another day to Sweden (our HQ is in Sarpsborg, just across the border) to visit the Koster islands, and then on a Holiday Monday we went to the Telemark region in the southwest. While in Telemark, we went to the village of Kviteseid, which is where my last known descendants lived on a farm. Through some research by my family and my co-workers, we were able to locate the actual land that our farm used to occupy. When our family moved to USA, the land was donated to the village and became a park, and then later a farm history museum, which it still is today. To my knowledge, I am the first of the living generations to have been there, and it was a pretty powerful experience.

This is the land where our farm was - i don't have exact plat maps of boundaries but this is as close as we could get. It is located on the banks of a river that has a series of locks/dams that you can take all the way down to the ocean.

Thats beautiful. I love Norway. Been fortunate to go there seven times. I would retire to Telemark region if I could, and I'ld be up in the above tree-line highlands between the valleys where so much good x-country skiing trails are.

I just found out I'll be heading back the last week in November so I will get a taste of the dark/cold this time around. One of my co-workers has a cabin in the west just north of Telemark and he's offered to take me there. Looks like i'll be there at least 2x a year and next spring I plan to stay an extra week and bring the whole family over.

That sounds wonderful. I believe there is a coastal train line that makes it through and around the fjords which is magnificent. I hadn't spent any time on the coast as i was involved in telemark ski racing every time I went, and so stayed more inland. I also never went to the biggest Mtn area, Galdhopiggen, as there were no races there. I think I bought my worst pizza in Norway. It was like biscuit dough with ketchup and bologna slices and little cheese, in a square pan. I think they've learned to sell better recipes by now. I do like their traditional food types, pickled fish and cheese on hardy bread and granola/muesli, for breakfast, etc. If you bring them US Bourbon you'll be appreciated for it. Not sure about custom's. I wish I was going back to Norway.
