NGD!

Happy Halloween!

I received a “treat” in the form of a gifted guitar.

Scott Clifton, a member of our site, is thinning his herd and thought that I’d enjoy this particular model. I work with people who have intellectual disabilities. His son is on the Autism spectrum which, among other things, affects how people learn, communicate and interact with others. The recognition was appreciated but the offer was something I wasn’t prepared for. It completely caught me off guard. Thank you, Scott.

The guitar is a special run Broadway jade Gretsch Electromatic Double Jet (that’s a mouthful). It’s a looker and plays ‘n sounds great. The picture doesn't catch the metal flaking on the face.

Gretch 4.JPG

I played it all night and made a short vid of my three guitar’s tones. The Gretch is the last one. A few notes about the 1:45 minute, Halloween-themed clip (the movie, not the song):
  • Teri Garr passed away last night. It was a coincidence that she is in this clip (I made it before I found out) but it’s no coincidence that it is one of my favorite scenes of all time.
  • I purposely used minimal effects so that the guitar’s inherent tones would come through.
  • All clips are played on the guitar’s bridge pickups.
  • This was a hard lick to learn. I never really nailed it. I think some more dirt and delay could have hidden the mistakes.
  • I tried playing both the lick and solo in one take, but I would butcher one or the other so I recorded them separately. This helped immensely.
Your thoughts and input are always appreciated.

P.S. Snowing today. :(

That's a beautiful guitar and a wonderful gesture. As a father of an autistic son myself I really appreciate the work you do - as I'm sure the people you help. And great playing!

I wiggled it a few times with epic fails. Hats-off to the people who can do it tastefully.

Great looking (and sounding) Gretsch! I have two special needs grandchildren. One with Phealan McDermid Syndrome and the other with autism (non-verbal). Those who step up and help these kids and adults are appreciated beyond belief, thank you Tommy. And what a great gesture Scott! This post made my heart happy today!

Very cool guitar. I am a divorced dad with custody of 4 kids, two of whom (19 daughter and 12 son) are autistic and minimally verbal. Really appreciate you and everyone who voluntarily tries to help kids like them and families like mine.

My Grandson is non-verbal autistic, so I appreciate what you do.

As for the Gretsch, Nice! I just put one of those Goldo trems on my Firebird. Let me know what you think of it.

I'm glad you like it Tommy. I bought that one and a jet in midnight sapphire at the same time. Both were originally hardtails with the V tailpiece. I originally planned to put a Bigsby B3 and a TV Jones Classic/Classic Plus set in each one, but decided to go with the Duesenberg Les Trem on the jade double jet and a Gretsch Bigsby B3 with a Towner Bar on the jet. The jet got a set of Classic/Classic Plus pickups, but the blacktop filtertrons on the double jet sounded too good to replace. The bridge is also a Compton Compensated bridge. It binds a little less than the stock adjustomatic and supposedly sounds better, but I had a hard time telling a difference in the tone.

This was the unmolested guitar:

Here is the modded midnight sapphire jet:

And here are a couple of the jade double jet after modding (still has the adjustomatic in these pics).

PS - I don't mean to hijack the thread.

@msc_

Scott,

I love it. 'Played it all day. It still hasn't made it to practice because it's been hard to get everyone there (much less the in the same state).

Thursday, I hope.
