It's been a minute! The last NGD I posted was in April 2019, when I got a Dean from Hell for my birthday! How the times flies. I've been meaning to do a separate post for each of these...but life kept getting in the way. Anyway, here is all the NGDs I should have posted in the last 2 and a half years. We're gonna be going oldest to newest!
2018 Fender Precision Bass MiM
I snagged this off of reverb in September 2020. I was just starting to really get to work recording my first solo album which you can listen to here...! When I decided it was finally time to buy a full scale bass. Up until this point I had been using a 3/4" SX Ursa bass, which was nice, but didn't have the full low end sound I wanted.I fell in love with the tide pool blue and maple neck combo. It was in super clean shape and came with a nice padded gig bag. It's been exactly what I wanted out of a bass. Solid, reliable, sounds good, and looks good too.
DeRosa 12-String Acoustic/Electric
So in late 2021 I decided it was finally time to buy a 12 string acoustic. I had been wanting one off and on for years. When I started looking, I noticed a distinct lack of mid-range 12 string acoustic lefties. I finally decided to buy an Oscar Schmidt. As you can see by the title, I didn't end up with one. I ordered one from 3 different online retailers claiming to have it in stock, only to be refunded by all 3 because it was actually out of stock. So I came across a reverb listing for this DeRosa. It was $250 and a brand I had never heard of, but I took the risk. I was pleasantly surprised! It stays in tune better than I would expect for a decidedly low-end 12 string, surprisingly good, actually. It sounds much more expensive than it was. The only issue I had with it was that the preamp would cut in and out. One re-soldered connection later, and we're good to go! I would definitely recommend it based on what I paid.
2021 Fender Jag-Stang 30th Anniversary Reissue
Everyone who knows me, knows that I love Nirvana. They were the band that inspired me to make music and more-so to write my own songs. I had a wanted a Fender Jag-Stang as long as I could remember, but they have always been hard to come by left handed, often fetching double or triple righty prices. Last I had looked they were selling for nearly $4,000 on reverb. There were rumors it was going to be reissued for the Nevermind 30th anniversary. I promised myself, if they put them up for preorder I was ordering one no matter the cost. At $1,300 people were mad about the cost of an MiM guitar, but it was very much worth it compared to the $4k lefties were going for. And so, they went up for preorder on in July 2021 with an October 2021 expected release, which was delayed, and delayed, and delayed. I finally received mine in May 2022. I absolutely love it. I expected it to feel much bigger, from the photos I'd seen and the weird shape, but honestly, It's very small, and very comfortable to play. It has a great punk rock sound. Here is a video of me playing an early Green Day song featuring the Jag-Stang.
Donner Ukulele
I had been toying with buying one for awhile, and I found this Donner one, in a whole kit (case, tuner, strings, etc) for like $30. It doesn't get used a lot, but it's fun to have around. If you can tell by the difference in the photography locale, I forgot about it until I was preparing this post.
80s Cort Explorer Copy
I found this bad boy at a local music store, it was one of the owner's guitars he had decided to part with. I'd never seen a lefty Cort explorer copy before, so I was immediately intrigued. This thing oozes 80s. It has a brass nut, engraved brass truss rod cover, saddles, and even brass inlays. Gold hardware, and cream plastics. The guitar has aged to a really nice cream color, you can still see the bright white finish under the poker chip and knobs. There is a spot of white between the pickups where the finish has worn back through to reveal white, I'm guessing from years of picking rubbing through the finish. Feels nice to play, the sound cuts through reallly well because of all the brass. A cool score for sure.
2005 Taylor Baby 305
While on vacation in Virginia Beach in May of this year I stopped at Music-Go-Round. This was the only lefty in the whole store, and I almost missed it. I'd always heard good things about Taylor, but I've always been satisfied with my full size Martin. However, when I picked it up and I knew it was coming home. It has such a big and full sound for such a small guitar and it plays like butter. I keep it in my bedroom, to noodle, and just pick on in my down time. Decoding the serial reveals it was built on July 19th, 2005 and was the 6th instrument build that day.
1984/1985 Quest Atak 5
My most recent pick up just earlier this month, and one I broke a rule for. I told myself I wouldn't buy any more right handed guitars, but when I found this at a local pawnshop, with the original case. I knew it was too cool to pass up. These are Japanese made, from the Matsumoko factory. As far as I can tell they were only make in 1984 and 1985. I think this is a later one, because of the rosewood board, and black headstock, most of the ones I see online have maple. They are in the style of the Aria Pro II Urchin (though i think this looks cooler, myself). it looked a little rough, but once I got it home and cleaned it up, I was amazed at just how good of shape it was actually in. Everything works, it even has a push-pull pot to split the coils! The only two flaws are a finish dent, just under the neck pickup, and a hole that was drilled in the back (I'm guessing to try an alternate strap position?) that took a small piece of the finish off with it. I can't play righty very efficiently but it sounded good to me. Looks cool as hell. I plan on just keeping it around for people who visit to have a righty to play, but I may also list it for sale. Feel free to shoot me an offer if you're interested!
