There used to be a place on the site to post these acoustic efforts but I can't find it. Anyhoo... "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" by David Allan Coe.

I heard this song the other day and decided to take it to band practice last night. The guys played it alright but one of the them was poopy about it saying that it was "too country." Ok. I'll try it on my own.

I pushed Reaper's pitch correction to the limit on this one (and broke it, I think).

nice, simple, elegant, with feeling. I liked it

NIce and fun tune. KInd of a mashup vaguely reminiscent of 'A boy named Sue' and "Grandma got runover by a Reindeer'

Man this was great. Honestly reminded me of the guys that sing along in "something about mary". This was epic on so many levels.

Great job Tommy!! That is a great song co-written by Steve Goodman and my songwriting hero John Prine. John did not want credit for the song because he thought if might be offensive to the country music industry. Of course once DAC made it a hit John even used to play it live. The original lyrics are somewhat different from what Coe recorded.

Short story about that song. The Tonebenders were playing a wedding reception for a wealthy lawyer's daughter. The young couple had actually gotten married months before in Mexico but this was the reception back home. There were a lot of people there and it was sort of divided between a contingency the age of the newlyweds and another group, let's say our age, or the age of the parents. This was a well-healed bunch and there were at least 50 chicks there above the crazy hot line. Lots of pretty people with money and they knew how to party, both generations. We played the time frame we were contracted for but they were not ready to quit. So, the dad approached and offered us a few hundred to play some more and we graciously agreed. We knew a lot of songs but finally we were starting to get low on hits and we were pulling out stuff from the archives. We finished what we thought was the last song. We were exhausted at this point. They demanded one more like it was a concert. We were reaching deep, I suggested to the other guitar player we play Never Even Called Me By My Name. He poo pooed the idea as this did not seem like a country music crowd but I said let's just do it and see what happens.

I turned to the mic and said, "well it was all I could do to keep from crying" and it was ON! These young folks lost their minds. By the time we were into the second verse there were at least 20 hot chicks on the stage singing along and doing all the call back lines. I looked over at the other guitar player who was surround by hotness and he was smiling from ear to ear. It was just one of those magical moments. When the song finished they wanted another but our drummer said he was done so I hopped on the drums and we finished the night with Some Kind Of Wonderful which, fortunately, was within my drum capabilities. The only song I ever played drums on live with the Tonebenders. The chicks remained on the stage dancing for the finale and all was good in Tonebender land.

@tonebender That's a great story! Thanks for the history on it, too. That's stuff I should have known (but I know now).

Loved it Tommy. Our band is taking about working this one into the set. I don't hear covered often but when I do, almost everyone in the room is singing along!

@tlarson58 You inspired me to bring that song back. I played it at my solo gig yesterday up in Crystal River. While is was a good crowd they did not react nearly as enthusiastically as the last time I played it. LOL I do think I will keep it on the list for a while. I have some gigs coming up that will appreciated it.
