Original #2 from sabasgr68 – In Front of a Gun Again (based on true events)

This is a simple song of what happens in life sometimes. My son got robbed about ten days ago. He wasn´t hurt or anything, thank God; the loss was material, but he was in front of a gun again - pointing at his stomach -, as the song title says, for a fourth time. This is his second time on a bus.

After I overcame the first impact, two days later, that phrase came to my mind – in English; yes, I tend to think a lot in English-, I though “…in front of a gun again…”, and then it began taking the shape of a song.

So here it is, a scary story told with simple lyrics and simple chords, and a rather long – that´s how I like it, sorry guys – but simple solo.

You´re born again when you´re still in one piece after being in front of a gun, gents.

Fender Mustang 1 v1 amp.

Four guitar tracks (all with the AL3000):

- Base rhythm throughout all the song,
- Fills, second rhythm before solo, and final “rhythm solo”,
- Main solo (with Touch Wah effect),
- Bass line (with a modified preset), lowered one octave down with Audacity, and some EQ done.

Drum track made with Hydrogen – took me a while to do it; around 5-6 hours for a +5 minute track :(

Audacity.

I don´t sing well. I did some adjustments to the vocal recording – compression, normalization, and EQ -, and minor additions. First time I record a song and sing, so I did my best to come with a decent mix with my resources (I know it can be bettered a lot). I can´t sing LOUD here at home, so that was an issue too, singing at low volume.

Solo starts at 2:46.

No more chit chat, hope you like it and hope you end up moving your feet at the beat of the song.

Here´s the lyrics in case it is not all clear (there might be some grammar errors  ) Scroll down for the Soundcloud link ;)

** Hey, guys, I must add that, same as in the other times, this wasn´t just an "unpleaseant" thing that happened. It´s not something we´d like to go through again. I actually thought on posting a thread about it, just to vent it out with you, but finally decided to only post about the song and just mentioning the event as the background that triggered the inspiration, but not making it the subject of the thread. Writing this song about it was actually therapeutic, and, aside of my Faith, helped dealing with it somehow. **

In front of a gun again

In front of a gun again
Your life in a blink, your eyes just standing still
Time freezes up and yet it´s going fast
A scream trapped inside, you think “Oh, not again”
In front of a gun again

In front of a gun again
Afraid of that hand that has my breath of life
Wondering if my book is gonna close
On all of my dreams and all the ones I love

In front of a gun again
In front of a gun again
In front of a gun again

Ten seconds later and I ask myself
Was this for real or was it just a dream
It´s hard to believe, you force yourself to see
You´re there in one piece, your life is yours to keep
In front of a gun again

Thanks be to God, I made it this time
Can´t wait to go home and see the love in your eyes
But the shaking is coming, there´s no more left to say
I was born for a fourth time

In front of a gun again
In front of a gun again
In front of a gun again...

PS: No vocals track below

Glad to hear he's ok. Thank god. This song is awesome! It has a very big Dire Straits vibe to it. I love the feel of it. Nice playing!

Well played, Sabas. I hear some Neil Young style in there. But its your style. Its good.
I feel sorry for the state of Venezuela and so many good people living under such a situation.

Great job! Really love the middle on this. Very cool. And--your singing is just fine, man! Nice tasty licks throughout, too.

Audacity can really make great recordings. A buddy of mine won't use anything else for his tunes.

Glad your son is OK.

Thanks so much for your words, glad you liked it!

Yeah, I love Audacity too. It´s very good considering is free; still learning new things about it.

It's great that you can channel this incident into a cool song. Very Neil Young-ish to my ears - which is a wonderful thing. Best to your family. Be well, my friend.

Very well done! And very impressive that you did in Audacity. Not the easiest thing to mix in! The guitar tone was perfect for this song and when the solo came in, it was just what was needed. Great job!

Oh, and I actually think that the vocals really fit the mood of the song.

Very nice! I agree with the Neil Young and Dire Straits vibe, and add a little Tom Petty in there.

Vocals were pretty good, but a little low in the mix. I always find it hard to bring the vocals way up front - it’s weird listening to your own voice.

Yeah, it´s a way of dealing with it. Thanks so much, pal!

Hey, Steve, thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! I hoped to capture the mood in every sense... seems I did.

Thanks, man... I appreciate your words. Yeah, it´s weird, and since I actually don´t like the sound of my voice, maybe I unconciously tried to hide it.

Most people don’t like their singing voice at first... but you learn to accept it.

So sorry to hear what your family has to go through. It just keeps reminding me that civilization is just a paper thin veneer and it all goes away when you unravel civilization. Thank God you son is physically unhurt and hopefully the same for his mental and spiritual state too.
And that was a great song. I keep forgetting how good a guitar player you are. Very tasty and good groove.
Take care.

You're a helluva guy Sabas. I hear tinges of Lou Reed in that song. Good stuff. I am glad your son is okay and it remains that way.
