Is there a way to opt out of having these show up when i read a thread?
They're really annoying.

I removed mine, didn't realize that it's annoying but I can see why - it's swelling the height of the post. Would be better if it was viewable on demand, like by hovering a mouse over an icon or avatar. I can see where it may be handy, but probably nobody cares 99.(9)% of the time
That's why I've never put a gear list in my sig. I assume nobody cares what gear I have. I can't say I'm terribly annoyed by them, but I can't recall actually reading anybody's gear list, either.Gear_Junky wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 3:47 pm I removed mine, didn't realize that it's annoying but I can see why - it's swelling the height of the post. I always figured that if I'm asking a technical question, it helps to give it context. But I guess that's not reality. We live in a world where someone asks a question on Amazon about a product (addressed to sellers or those buyers who know the answer) and there's always someone who posts "I don't know"

I want tobijohn to add his gearlist just to annoy the anti-scroller crowd. Also want to see what it might do to the stylesheet. Please doublespace too TJ.

I tried but the text field character limitation won't allow it. I guess that's a good thing too...

That drives me bananas! Especially when it's me asking the question. I wish there was a reply option so I could verbally dope-slap them. Or at least say: "You know, just because Amazon sent you this question in an email, it doesn't mean you're OBLIGATED to respond to it". Maybe if more people saw that, there would be fewer unhelpful responses.Gear_Junky wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 9:46 pm I always figured that if I'm asking a technical question, it helps to give it context. Sadly, people are being trained to respond to prompts, like Pavlov's dogs. At work we have (well, had, until about March) "jeans day Fridays" - we have "business casual" usually (jeans not allowed) but on Fridays people are allowed to wear jeans. Ok, great. I've been noticing that people who obviously don't wear jeans in their daily life, they are not most comfortable in jeans, they all show up in jeans as if it's mandatory. And now... just look at everyone dutifully wearing useless pieces of fabric on their faces.
Sadly, I agree... Humans are social animals, so there will always be the psycho/emotional imperative to "fit in". People have been like that since we started forming clans, tribes and communities, but as of late, people seem to have also become palpably dumber and less capable of thinking for themselves. People want to be told what to do, so they can get back to their smartphones, and social media, to receive more brainwashing and conditioning.Gear_Junky wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 10:52 pmSadly, people are being trained to respond to prompts, like Pavlov's dogs. I would even argue not just "have become", but rather "have been deliberately conditioned" to become that way. It is not an accident or natural development.
"Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one." Charles Mackay.
Of course... I assumed that went without saying. For decades our entire school system has been training children to be compliant drones, incapable of critical thinking. Television, the internet and social media just reinforce the culture of "group think".Gear_Junky wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 9:04 am

It's possible to delete gear lists altogether, but would be yet more code customisation to remove it from the thread display, and to be honest, I'd rather keep reliability over more custom coding.
Hope that's acceptable!

Well I don't list mine and try and skip over others. I figure if interest is shown in a particular piece of gear most owners will chime in. And yes we are conditioned in schools I remember reading american schools were based on the english schools. Outside of university most schools then 100 years ago were geared toward "producing a docile and unquestioning citizen"

Interesting observation. But at least 100 years ago students were taught many things. I am reminded of a well-known "8th grade exam from 1912" example, which is almost a meme now. There are many college "kids" these days who are not capable of passing that test. Many colleges today offer "remedial courses" because math in high school is basically on the level of 6th grade algebra, if that.
Getting back to "producing a docile and unquestioning citizen", that may well have been the intention, but when the populace is well educated, even in simple, mundane subjects, it becomes more difficult to keep them docile. That's why there were dissidents in USSR - there was always a substantial slice of the population receiving good education on the level of schools and colleges. It becomes very difficult to believe the fake narrative, which is so obviously false. That is why the 1960's and 70's youths in Russia came to be known as the cynical generation. Sure, they might've been powerless to change the system, but many of them were not "buying it" and went through the motions in jest.
It's a lot more effective to inundate a populace with smart gadgets while keeping them at a lower level. These gadgets might as well be "miracles", but taken for granted. In Hollywood movies hero characters very quickly "figure out" complex scientific problems, without any background, so it appears trivial.
I had a coworker (fresh outta college), about 3 years ago. We were all a bit early to a meeting, talking about things, for some reason physics came up. Nobody pressed her to say anything, but she said "I didn't take physics, but I... understand physics" (she emphasized "understand" with air quotes). I'll never forget that
Physics I have a barebone knowledge of and admit I don't understand most of it. I had an uncle who probably followed the math of it . Bob had no secondary education as family couldn't afford it but he was one who could do calculus in his head for fun. Typical English out of school at 15 unless your family could pay for more. He went to work for IBM in the 50's and became a senior systems analyst covering a lot of Europe

We have jeans fri too. And I see that. I haven't had a pair of jeans in 15 years. Too dressed up for me. Finally had a hawaiian day. I wear a hawaiian type shirt every day. People said hey you're finally in line. I said "no, you're finally in line with me and frankly if I had remembered I would have worn a polo shirt". Had people bug me about it and to wear casual on the right day" I told them if you really want me to I'll show up in a crop top and thong and none of us will need to worry about casual day again.Gear_Junky wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 10:52 pmSadly, people are being trained to respond to prompts, like Pavlov's dogs. It blows my mind what some people will put up with. I was real docile growing up. Shy and quiet. Very tall so I was fun to pick on. It was miserable to the point I didn't care if I died it was better than putting up with the shit. I decided the next person that tried it I was going to push back. And I didn't care who died if needed. Its amazing what going into every situation with a tiny tiny bit if kill or be killed attitude can do for you. I've never had to be in a fight, I'm always reasonable and most people think I'm friendly. Those few see what they can take type assholes you run into seemed to sense to not push too far. I can see sort of how you can become XXXXX [ADMIN EDIT] if you aren't careful but I can also see the value of become him if you need too. And no I'm not a fan of his style.Mossman wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 1:44 pmOf course... I assumed that went without saying.
