Hey folks! I didn't see a post about it, but I'm curious if anybody bought anything from Musiciansfriend's Stupid Deal of the Hour yesterday?
I didn't, but I also slept checking for a couple of the hours, so I don't even know everything they offered. And when they have something really good, it's usually in small numbers and sells out quick, only to get replaced by something not so interesting.
So what'd ya see/get?

I'm familiar with stupid deal of the day. How do I access SDOTH? I don't see that.
same thing, same place, just some days they have a set of like 9 bad deals instead of 1. just kidding, kinda, sometimes they are decent deals although rarely (never?) really amazing deals.Gear_Junky wrote: ↑Tue Sep 01, 2020 11:00 am I'm familiar with stupid deal of the day. the deals of the hour are really deals of the day anyway because they're valid all day (or i guess until they run out) even after they're no longer the featured deal.

Agreed. It probably goes all the way back to when they had those dirt-cheap Bugera heads that several AGF folks purchased, but that has to have been at least 4-5 years ago. I unsubscribed from MF a few years back because there is rarely anything even remotely worth considering on SDOTD in my $.02.

Yeah, not often, but every now and then they put up something I want. That's how I got my Ibanez ATK305 ($249), G&L Gloss clear Tribute ASAT Ash ($299), and my Quilter 101 Mini ($179) and Problock 200 ($299) among other stuff.uwmcscott wrote: ↑Tue Sep 01, 2020 11:10 amAgreed. True - i just got sick of all the recycled deals. Glad you were able to find some bargains. I don't have a lot of gear and for the most part I usually buy used gear anyway as of late.

That's where it's at! The advantage of used gear, assuming you've done your due diligence and made sure of condition, is that if you end up selling/trading it later, there's almost no loss in value - you bought it "used", most of these things don't lose value like cars, so used is used, whether 6 months or 6 years or 20 years old. Sometimes it gains value, but that's due to other factors. Usually my rule of thumb is half the new price - that's what used gear should cost.
yup. you can take risks with used gear (assuming you are careful and don't overspend or get suckered by an unscrupulous seller) that you can't take with new gear since you should be able to get out what you put in. lets you try a lot of things you think you'll like without having to take a bath if you wind up liking it less than you thought. just gotta choose wisely, but honestly that's true for new stuff too. if you're patient and hop on the unusually good used deals it's pretty easy to turn stuff around at a modest (or large, if you're especially lucky) profit and fund some more speculation. it's fun and you wind up with stuff you might love that you would never have taken a chance on new.Gear_Junky wrote: ↑Tue Sep 01, 2020 11:27 amThat's where it's at! True words! I quit playing in the early 2000's and sold everything I had except an acoustic guitar. Then in the late 2000's I was getting back into it, before I found Rondo and AGF, and I bought a non-working Samick LP clone on CL (knowing I could easily fix it). It had a cold solder joint and I fixed it with no cost to myself except a little time. It looked good, but I didn't like its sound and didn't want to invest in it (while working on it I saw that it's basically made from plywood and has a hollow body). Anyway, I sold it at a good profit and bought another guitar. I would also buy used pedals at local music stores and re-sell them on eBay (while learning about pedals).voodoorat wrote: ↑Tue Sep 01, 2020 11:38 am if you're patient and hop on the unusually good used deals it's pretty easy to turn stuff around at a modest (or large, if you're especially lucky) profit and fund some more speculation. it's fun and you wind up with stuff you might love that you would never have taken a chance on new.
