Beirut’s Big Boom

My gosh. Sure many of you have seen some of the videos circulating. That shockwave was INTENSE on the secondary. As to date they’re claiming a metric sh*t ton of Ammonium Nitrate left in improper storage conditions. To be exact 5.5 MILLION POUNDS OF IT. That’s quite a “fertilizer bomb”.
Prayers out to the lost, injured, and displaced. Totally unimaginable to be close to that explosion. It’s one of those, if it is indeed an accident, unbelievably believable SNAFU’s. Wow.

I've been watching the reports in AlJazeera & SKYTV UK since yesterday afternoon.
Unbelievable!
I see the USGS is showing as a 3.3 quake on the Richter scale.

Seriously. There are so many fringe theories running around. Hopefully it was gross negligence and not state sponsored

It's absolutely insane. A horrible thing to see outside a disaster movie.
2020 sure is doing all it can to make 2019 look decent!
Thoughts with those caught up

Well, credible news reports are saying that 2750 metric tonnes of ammonium nitrate have been stored in that warehouse since 2014.
I'd call it a minor miracle it hasn't occurred years ago.

That was some crazy footage! Terrible for the people caught up in it!

Pretty spectacular footage especially of the secondary. Coincidence they were filming? Let the conspirati' spew forth!

I believe then filming began as a result of the primary blast with no knowledge of a secondary. Otherwise they would have been beating feet outta there. There were a string of blazes and explosions around the world yesterday.

ICBW, but wasn't there just a fire first, then the explosion?

You probably know more than me. I probably made the wrong assumption that the first incident was an explosion as well.

Yes. It was kinda like 9/11 how there is much more footage of the 2nd plane hitting the towers because people were filming the result of the first plane. Supposedly, there was some initial explosion or fire that seemed pretty bad to start, which likely triggered the 2nd, ridiculous explosion.
It'll be interesting what comes out as time goes on. Right now, everyone besides a certain Twitter fiend is saying that it was negligence. I mean, it COULD be an attack, but I'm waiting for more information to come out before jumping on that theory since said Twitter fiend has spewed plenty of nonsense before.

I don't know much about conspiracy theories, but it certainly doesn't take a scholar to determine a very likely scenario about a shit-ton of volatile explosive material sitting in a very accessible port area, seized and held for reasons unknown and mired in years of "red tape." In Lebanon.
I feel bad about the lives ruined and lost, of course, but I couldn't help but watch that explosion over and over. The physics of the blast are just boggling to the mind.

That humid air blasted by extreme heat was quite visually stunning When viewed through a screen an unaffected

That explosion will be studied for ideas by hollywood special effects guys and we will be seeing this type of thing in movies from now on. Even after you count the dead and injured how many partially deaf and shell shocked will come from that.

I was watching the footage (I believe there was a smaller explosion due to the fire in the warehouse with the confiscated explosives) and you could see the little green flickers in the fire that (I think) were fireworks going off in the warehouse and I was thinking, "What a terrible explosion that must have been." I was completely unprepared for the massive detonation of the adjoining building in the next few seconds. That's one of the scariest things I've ever seen - those poor people never knew what hit them. Last I heard the body count was at 75 but you just know it's way higher than that.
The video from the boat really showed the shockwave. Just unbelievable destructive force. Good example of why you shouldn't store ammonium nitrate in such huge quantities.

As I type this the "official" death toll is 135.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the numbers hit 4 digits as they comb through the debris. That explosion was unreal.
Maybe I'm wrong, the only saving grace would be that it was in a port area rather than a residential area. But I've heard so many stories of people saying their homes were absolutely destroyed. It's terrible.

It is certainly a tragedy for all those affected. Having said that, COVID 19 is killing 135 people about every 3 hours right here back home. I think if i have to go I’d rather be sitting in that warehouse when it went up.

My first thought was..."OMG...somebody really did it!" It looked like the small atomic test explosions in Nevada years back. I was very scary...

That's my understanding from the many videos, that there was a fire that was not contained soon enough.

I forget the whole list but I know a lab in Wuhan went up in fire killing six, North Korea had some sort of explosion killing nine. Now the UAE has a massive fire today. Weird weird weird

Apparently weird stuff going on in Iran as well. I started to link ABC.Au but I am not sure what is considered political here and what is not.
I truly wish everyone and everything would unfeck itself.
