Hey all. Picked up some tiny trees recently. The first and smaller of the two is Jade, and the second is Fukien Tea.

It's great decor and hey, I'll take as many fresh sources of oxygen as I can get. The Fukien I think is a good 10 years old while the Jade is much younger. I think the Jade is already deserving of a larger pot, but I've heard to let it run a full grow season before transferring.

Thought I'd share and see if you have any interest.

PS, it's kinda weird how uploading pics to the forum auto rotates them 90 degrees. You get the point though.

i got my mom into bonsai years ago. i used to regularly drive 3 hours across Virginia on highway 58 to visit my girlfriend at the time who lived in Danville. i would always pass by a little sign on the side of the road that just said "Bonsai Farm" with an arrow pointing to a little dirt road. My mom is big into gardening and has a little greenhouse, so i thought it'd be a good gift. One day I made the trek out to the Bonsai Farm, and sure enough at the end of the dirt road was a little house and a couple of greenhouses that belonged to an old Korean couple. The lady had hundreds of Bonsai trees of all kinds in her greenhouses. She gave me a tour and made some suggestions on good beginner trees. I picked what I considered to be a pretty classic looking tree and she tidied it up a bit and sold it to me. She also gave me several pamphlets of Korean religious literature that, from what I could gather, seemed to suggest the world was ending soon. It was one of the strangest, most unique experiences of my life. This must have been around 2007-2008. I'm not positive, but I think my mom has kept the tree alive to this day. It ended being a great gift, and she has several different trees now. I'll have to snap some pics the next time I visit.

Way cool. Pretty sure I've seen those pamphlets at Korean restaurants in LA too.

And yeah would definitely be interested in pics next time you're in the neighborhood

Bonsai is awesome. Every year they have a display of them at the Missouri botanical gardens. I love them.

I currently have a roughly seven or eight year old Golden Gate Ficus. I have it in wire training right now. It is enjoying the southern heart and humidity this time of year. It’s going to get another trim soon. I’ve already done one session of wire this season. In regards to repotting -
Definitely wait to do that until late winter early spring. Give it time to rehabilitate prior to the next grow seasons. Don’t be afraid to trim the roots! Trim those guys back around 1/3 to 1/2 of what they are. Only use a larger pot if you want the tree to grow larger in size. Otherwise maintain the same size or same pot and allow it to mature in it! It’s fun stuff!

Nice! Thanks for the tip on the root trim as well.

I thought a bigger pot might help to grow the trunk thicker, then I can trim and dwarf it again.

The Fukien Tea meanwhile is well aged with quite a nice trunk. Will see about getting better pics in the daylight.

That seems like a good idea. I am sure there is a YouTube video about increasing trunk girth!

That one could use a diet of cheese burgers you’re right. My Ficus isn’t thick per se, but it has a proportionate size I suppose. That Fukien is nice!

I was a member of the bonsai club for a year. Had 10 or so I killed. Now I look at others mostly. Maybe if I retire.

I really don't get the separate forums thing, I find that so incredibly annoying. That's why I use new posts or today's posts or what have you, rather than having to click into 17 different places.

Negative. I have been on computers since 1990 if not 1989. Have never had much of a use for paper except when I liked drawing.
