EVH Solos are Cut

Always wondered why Eddie has such weird phrasing in his solos. Now it makes perfect sense. Thats how I got weird phrasing in my solos too, lol.

Comping is standard fare, everyone does it. Then they learn them to play them live.

Right, I have done the exact same. But EVHs are particularly obvious. I can't think of anyone else famous that has that blatantly cut together phrasing. It's a really distinct aspect of his solos, even though it's common elsewhere.

Hell I still can't play one of my solos the way we cut it. LOL.

I bet he did that for "Jump." I had the hardest time wrapping my head around that solo when I had to learn the song for my band back when I joined in 2016. I ended up making up my own thing since I had a hard time remembering the "convoluted nonsense" (what I called it at the time) that he played all while learning 60 other songs at the same time. Here's the gist of what I play (this is from a show in 2017)

And here's what Eddie played on the recording:

Side note: watching that music video makes it look like it was a complete joke making fun of 80's music videos...

Writing is writing. So what if he "pieced" them? He assembled, then he played them live.

Then... he changed them incessantly.

I question a lot of things in this world, but I do not question Edward Lodewijk Van Halen with a guitar in his hands.

And this is why Clapton is God. He improvised the live recorded version of "Crossroads" we all know and are familiar with. No slicing , dicing, comping, or protools, just pure improvisational brilliance in real time.

Okay, now I get it.

I'm reasonably certain it was. The story I've heard is that Jump was basically Ed going "Pop? Hold my Super Later."

* Props if you know what a Super Later is.

Damn, that's a deep reference!

Did anybody ever discover the full recipe?

I know from Dave's autobiography that fresh fruit was key. At one point, they were about to leave a hotel, and couldn't find Rudy, and he showed up at the last minute, saying "I had I hard time getting fresh peaches, but I finally found some."

And in"Jump," you can hear the overlap when he cut in the tapping part.

We're talking about a bunch of rockers. A bunch of kids, even. A bunch of kid rockers. Having an exact recipe might be just outside the realm of reason, but I'm rationalizing here. :)

Sounds like a hot-mixed party punch to me, and outside of some key elements I bet the support players depended on what was available at the party house, lol.

That's what I'd envision Dave doing anyway. Half plan, half wing it.

I honestly had NO idea that EVH cut his solos together.

To me, that's cheating.

But then again, I only recently found out that Miles Davis' "Bitches Bew" songs were cut together from various jams.

I would say it depends. I'll piece together a solo while I'm composing it. But when it comes time to record the final version, I want to be able to play it all the way through.

Heard it about lynch but not evh. So Interesting to me. Seems sort of like cheating but really what's less cheating than playing all the bits then separately arranging themknowing no matter what impossible thing you create you still have no doubt you can learn it in an hr or so.
Editing is so alien to me I might let to play like lynch before I get editing working. Either would be something over 2 lifetime's i suspect

I guess I'm a cheater. If that lumps me in a group of talent that includes EVH... I've been called worse.

My entire recordings are duct tape extravaganzas. There’s not a single song I’ve tracked that I could play through live.
