A pictures is worth a thousand words, they say.

$79.99/mo, wasn't bad when I first got it for $49.99/mo, when they were honoring my original TWC contract, then they raised it to $59.99/mo saying that the $49.99/mo was just a promotion, rinse and repeat a few more times, and now it's $80 a month. 🤷‍♂️

MetroNet is setting up shop in town though and their prices blow Spectrum outta the water, so if I'm still in town when that's an option I'll be getting that, but I might be doing some rural-ish living soon and the internet's always bullshit outta town.

I'm generally around 235 download and 11 upload.

I know we have folks who were on the internet looooong before me. I think 28.8 was my first modem speed, the 33.3 shortly after and I thought 56k was amazing. 1st highspeed internet for me was 1mb DL and I have no idea of the upstream speed back then.

I got sick just thinking downloading at that speed! So, $80/mo is a rather high internet cost? mmm

If I got sick at 100 download, at your speed of 235 I´d just faint... That´s crazy! My head it´s still trying to imagine it.

Are you serious about 1gb DL?

I'm at 71 down and 6 up. That's what I'm paying for, so no real complaints. Everything is pretty near instant with many devices in use, so I haven't felt the need to pay for more.

sabasgr68 lol $80 is $30 more than I was originally paying, so it's relatively expensive I guess. No complaints about the speed, now the provided router/modem on the other hand has the bandwidth of a potato clock.

I remember having a 28k connection when I was a kid that I thought was fast, then I saw a 56k connection for most of my teenage years, and now we have gigabit wifi lol. It's nuts, I'll complain about the internet feeling like it's crawling when it drops to ~46mbps. 😅

First run this morning.

Ran it again and got 390Mbps down and 26Mbps Up.

My plan is only for 300Mbps and I regularly get more than that.

82 down
10 up $79 a month. I believe Cox is my only choice for high speed last I looked.

NOTE: Speed may depend on a wired or wireless connection.

I remember when my 14.4 modem was “fast” and I could download a pirated game from a bbs in just a day or two depending on how many floppy images I needed to get. The connection in Venezuela is blazing fast in comparison!

These days I get about 118 Mbps down when close to the main access point on 5 ghz and 60 ish on 2.4 in the rest of the house unless someone is using the microwave. Upload is about 11-12 either way.

The first screenshot is my internet speed going into my Google mesh router system (average 212 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up).

The 2nd is using Fast.com on my desktop computer (76 Mbps down, 9.8 Mbps up). My desktop computer is hardwired ethernet now, but the ethernet goes through 2 different network switches and a few jacks before it gets to my computer. The reason for this is kinda long and boring. In the end, it's only slightly faster hardwired now than it was when it was on WiFi, but it also clears up bandwidth on my WiFi for devices that need wireless. I have a laptop that's plugged into the primary switch right next to the router and it gets the same internet speeds, but has faster transfer speeds to my NAS (little personal server for backing up my data).

Also, I use Fast.com because it's operated by Netflix, so if my ISP (Spectrum) throttles Netflix, it also affects this measurement. This is important because if an ISP throttles internet, they typically keep internet speed sites unthrottled so people can't complain about slow internet. For instance, speedtest.net said my download speed was 94.62 Mbps instead of the 84 Mbps that fast.com said. This is why Net Neutrality is important and it still pisses me off that our government destroyed it in a partisan effort despite 90% of Americans being in favor of it.

And in case anyone was curious, I have 27 actively devices hooked up to my network, so internet speed is pretty important to me.

My only option where I live (rural) is cellular. On a GOOD day, I get 1MB up/down.

No sabasgr68 , it was late and I was tired. I meant 1mb as first high speed internet.

The first internet service I used was Netzero, one of the free ones that limited the number of hours of use unless you wanted to pay $9.99 per month for unlimited.

RockYoWorld I just tried fast.com and got 180, and then 190. I pay for 200 and spectrum and some other services usually show me at 220-235. Si it looks like a 30 to 50 mb drop if fast.com is accurate. That is a significant amount.

200 megs is the lowest speed spectrum offers in my area unless you go into an office and tell them you have limited income or other issues. I told them my parents were retired (true) and rarely use the internet any more but had to have it for their phone service. They eventually gave them 25mbs for a reduced total package fee.

A friend of mine had dropped his to maybe 2 or 3 mbs while it was still Time Warner and refused to upgrade when spectrum took over. Last I heard he said he could do all he wanted to do on that. He said he generally tested out at around 4-5mbs.

Internet speed test

Megabits per second
Waiting for upload to start...
190.2

Mbps download

56.9

Mbps upload

I'm supposed to have 1 gigabyte for $79.99/mo

I think we have the same plan. Mine's ~$70/month. I only have internet. The download speed is fine for me. I do wish my upload could be faster when I'm uploading larger files to coworkers and friends. AT&T has their fiber optics coming through. Of course that would be faster, but they have a monthly data limit that I would blow past before halfway through the month.

313 / 11 to the router as of this morning.

48 / 10 wireless to this laptop.

Xfinity, pretty much the only decent option here between these bigass rocks. No complaints other than the time period "promotional price/full price" bullshit they all run.

We have Spectrum and the 70 mb is considered the "Extreme" tier in my area. It appears as though the pricing reflects the relative speed in an area.

When I first encountered the internet my access was on a Teletype ASR33 TTY at a blazing 110 baud!
At first it didn't feel slow, but then I got a 300 baud access and wondered what could be better? As 110 baud suddenly felt slow
as molesasses in Minnesota.
The next jump was to 1200 baud and I wondered what could be better? As 300 baud suddenly felt slow. :)
Every step along the way has had the same result with the next step up until it got faster than DSL's 8mbps or so.
Except if you are trying to stream one movie on your system while your spouse/kids/etc. are trying to stream something else on their system(s).

Bottom line is regardless of your bit rate, familiarity breeds contempt.
After a certain amount of familiarity, whatever you have starts to feel too slow!

Must be area by area, likely based on infrastructure and local competition. Speculum claims 940mbs is top speed here. Also offer 200mbs (my plan) and 300mbs. I honestly think I could do fine with 50mbs, or maybe even 25 like at my parents. I don't stream movies or tv very often and I don't think youtube takes as much bandwidth though I may be wrong about that.

I´ve been meaning to comment but my internet hasn´t helped.

I run a test again today, as 0.69D was very low, and it showed up 2.4 Mbps D and 0.7 U. This is more consistent with my plan of 2MB.

I was between crying and laughing, since the max I could get, if I upgrade to the highest plan, is 10MB. And with the exception of Zipslack , you´re all getting at least 60-70 MB, and most of the rest above 100MB. I´m a man, so I won´t cry!

I must say that I should feel happy that our internet is not completely gone. Given the circumstances, is almost a miracle.
