I am growing.. something, like the start of a beard, and will soon need to start shaping and trimming, plus give it extra care via wash/moisturize, at some point.

Starter tools of the trade, without going crazy?

Can't help, I never make it more than 6 months without starting over. Mine gets too unruly when it gets long.

I did find a Target has a nice selection of beard balm and oils. I do like to use a beard balm to help take it a little as well. Have tried the oils, but I don't like the way it feels.

I have one specific wash I like called Sheamoisture, per the back of the tube is for "men of color", but I just like that it lathers nicely and makes my "beardruff" go away...

I hate my beard. Hate trimming it, hate washing it, hate wearing it. But it`s still better than shaving. I have no tips other than dont let your neck beard get out of control, and get one of those beard trimmer things, with the various depth attachments. Makes the monthly serious trim much easier, and you don`t really risk messing it up with a slip. I`m finding keeping it shorter is a bit more manageable, though I do envy long beard guys, my wife gets pissy with me when I start edging on that territory, calling me hillbilly, jedediah and the like. she`s so subtle

Well. this is a 70 (almost!) year old dude's growth and color, thin, whitish gray, so it has its own issues. And the mustache part blows, uneven on account of a major dog bite when I was a wee lad.
So, no, no ZZ Top look, sadly!

I found a YT video about shaping tips, balm and oil, as mentioned above, brush instead of comb, direction of trimming, etc.

Recommend a good trimmer?

When I had a goatee, I just used a barber's clipper with attachments. I imagine one would want longer attachments for the longer beards though.

I never grow anything more than a goatee. I couldn't deal with having a big, bushy beard. Plus, it would look weird because the hair on my head is brown while my facial hair is gray/white.

I like my Philips Norelco All In One. It has a lithium battery that lasts forever, cuts even my thickest sections on my chin like it is nothing, has a couple different width blade options to do general cleanup and edging work also has a couple trimmers for doing ears and nose that is becoming more and more necessary...

Depends on what style you're going for.

I have a short beard now, but I used to keep a much longer one. My recommendations:

- Wahl clipper for trimming: I like the corded one, because I find that the batteries don't last very long, but YMMV. Also, I find that clipping my beard when it's dry leaves split ends or very sharp ends, so clipping when it's damp works better.

- Proraso beard oil: use sparingly! It's good stuff, but you don't want greasy beard.

I've had a beard since I was in my 20's and I'm 66 now Idon't care for long beards so I trim it every couple of weeks these are the only clippers I use my granddaughter is a hair dresser for a living and she cuts my hair with these clipers as well. Here's a link

When you say trim every couple of weeks, do you mean control the length and clip the odd hair out of place, and this Wahl works well for that?

What about the size of the body?

Always check to be sure food like over easy eggs have not run down your beard and no one tells you. I use a regular electric hair cutter with one of the depth attachments on it to keep the over all length under control. I Use the trimmer to keep it from growing over my lips for Kissing.............if only I had someone wanted to kiss me haha. Keep it clean.

First time I kept a beard through the summer this year. Usually just the mustache and goatee, fill in to full but shaped beard in the fall through early spring.
I keep it short with a Wahl corded trimmer as well.

I just got a new one and the comb attachments suck, the old ones were fine.
Of course the old ones dont fit the new one.
It seems someone with no idea how this should work designed them.

Well the size of the Wahl body is about the size of a barbers clippers my body however,is a XXXXXXXlarge I guess I use a a couple of other things scissors and a razor, the scissors for triming my mustache even with my upper lip and the razor on the neck and side areas where I shape it.

I have a little battery powered beard trimmer with the attachment that is adjustable for desired length. About every 2-3 weeks I trim to number 6, then pop off the attachment and trim the neck and upper face. I have only took a razor to my face twice in the last 40 years and the last time was in 1986. I wash my beard with the same shampoo as I use on my hair. Easy peasy.

My advice, don't jump the gun! Give it 2 or 3 months of growth before you even think about trimming it.
You need to see how it wants to grow prior to starting trimming.

I've treated my beard exactly as I do the long hair on my head.

When I shampoo and condition my hair, I do the same with my head, using the same product. Don't ask for particulars, because I'm not brand loyal. I use whatever mrs tmc has put on the shower rack, and I trust that she uses good stuff on her own waist length hair.

I use some kind of glossing pomade on my hair, and I use the exact same product on my beard.

I've never trimmed my beard. I comb it after getting out of the shower, or when freshening up. It can be trained in that way.

A large part of the reason I started growing a beard was because I was sick of shaving and wanted to be free of that constant routine. If I had to concern myself with grooming, trimming, products, and hardware, then I might as well have kept shaving. I'm free of all of that.

I make my own beard balm. Even top of the noggin is barren, I use whatever the Mrs has for shampoo and conditioner. I apply the beard balm while white, brush, and trim around the upper lip because I dont' like chomping down on my stache hair

I don't consider myself a beard guy, but others do. The difference there is I keep mine well under 1/2" with a trimmer from Amazon. Longer gets itchy to me, so I like it very short. But trimming once a week beats shaving by a mile. Other than that, just normal soap and water, no goop.

Thanks. That is what would work the best for me, and what I am aiming for. So I do not need a super clipper, but I also do my, now thinning, hair so I may opt for mid-range clipper, mostly designed for light beard, but that can also do light haircuts.

Thanks. That is what would work the best for me, and what I am aiming for. So I do not need a super clipper, but I also do my, now thinning, hair so I may opt for mid-range clipper, mostly designed for light beard, but that can also do light haircuts.

In that case, more details - I always trim in a downward motion, not up. And my cheap-ish trimmer was a highly rated Wahl. I've never tried any others, so maybe there is better, but this one has served me well for years.

My beard always goes bin laden on me so I just trim it back every month or so when I finally notice it.
I have wondered about trying to tame it and let it go more zztop but I don't know anything about how or what I need.
I'd also like to color it but I can't find anything that works.
