One of the bands that inspired me to play was The Cult! I have always wanted to see them play live as a teenager in the 80s. Being in a third world Asian country, I always thought that there would be zero chance that they would come. I wouldn't have afforded the ticket anyway. It took me almost 4 decades to finally being able to watch them now that I'm in America, and even better because I was accompanied by my already adult son! I had the biggest smile watching them! What an amazing experience and show!

The Riviera Theatre in Chicago was a great venue because it catches the old Chicago vibe.
This was the stage level. I preferred the balcony as we get to sit and see the whole view of the set... part of my being a gear geek.
My son and I. I realized how old I was when I noticed that the crowd was composed of 99% daddys and mommys, and grandparents too! And... we noticed that we were the only Asians in the house too!
And, the mayhem starts!
The vocal exciter, Ian Astbury! Looking good at 60!
My guitar idol, Billy Duffy with his black and lemon burst Les Pauls made by the Gibson custom shop! Not a flashy shredder, but very melodic.
Billy Duffy with his iconic Gretsch G7593T Falcons in black and white.
John Tempesta was on drums (ex Exodus, Testament and White Zombie), Grant Fitzpatrick on bass, and Damon Fox on keyboards.
I really enjoyed the show! I had the widest smile from start to end! It was a dream come true moment for me! The show was incredible too as it was like watching a non-stop action movie! My son enjoyed it a lot too eventhough it wasn't his generation!
Thanks for reading and watching!

Reading this I'm living vicariously through your excitement. There's nothing like seeing a great rock band you really love who has impacted you not only as a music fan, but also as a musician. Like yourself, The Cult impacted me in both these regards.
Electric is one of my all time favorite rock albums. There was a lot of cheese being produced in 87 that does not stand the test of time and sounds hopelessly dated, but Electric is carved in stone and timeless. That album could be released today and be totally relevant.

Awesome, glad to hear you finally got to see them and that it was all you expected. I have 2 friends who were at the show in Minneapolis just a few days removed from the Chicago show and they both said it was a killer performance also.

Thanks for the post. I would have had the same grin. The Cult is the reason I picked up a guitar. 'Still not very good but I know a few Duffy licks.

THanks for this! Saw Iggy there back in the day....a great show if you are close...but a real hole otherwise. Neighborhood is suspect, especially these days.

You mean, the surrounding neighborhood of the Riviera Theatre is not safe?

City itself is not safe compared to what it was 5 years ago. It saying it's Escape From New York dangerous.....but safety has definitely gone downhill with Lightfoot in charge.

Great review. I too, felt like Electric was a great record. I had not been impressed by their earlier records, but loved that they moved in a harder rock vein with Electric. The riffs were great--familiar sounding, but great--and the dryish, unadorned production was definitely AC/DC inspired, in my opinion. Over the top vocals, sometimes-silly lyrics. Rock and roll for sure. Duffy is one of my guitar heroes, as well.
