Rattlesnake Cables

Anyone used 'em or heard of 'em?

I ordered one of the "Snakehead" cables in the tangerine color, couldn't resist, especially after they sent me a 15% off coupon code and a $10 gift card code after having made an account and browsed around without buying anything for a couple of months.

Looks like they use good cables, neutrik plugs, and build to order at least on their limited colors and I'm sure custom orders are built to order. Plus a lifetime warranty.

Anyway, they were super communicative already, I recieved an order verification, a build start verification, and a shipping notification yesterday, all within a few hours of placing my order. But this morning I recieved a personalized thank you video from the owner; Hank Donovan. Definitely seemed like a really cool dude. Probably post a little review of the cable when I get it in on Friday, but I have a feeling I'm about to be recommending them to most of the musicians I know.

Never heard of them before now, but I was just on their website checking them out.

I have mixed thoughts on cables. As a gigging musician, I know that they are a critical component. Cables need to be reliable, though I understand that any cable will inevitably fail. When they do it will be at the most inopportune moment as per Murphy's law. As with batteries, strings, and valves, redundancy with cables is essential.

Eddie Van Halen claimed to be able to hear the difference between a 20 ft cable and a 10ft cable. While this may sound far fetched to some, the roll off in the high frequencies due to capacitance is a real effect. Hendrix actually took advantage of this phenomenon to tame the shrillness of the Strat bridge pickup.

Many people disparage wireless over cables because of the loss of tone. However, the counter argument to this is the fact that a significant part of the "secret sauce" in Angus Young's tone was his Schaffer wireless unit.

Full disclosure here, my totally honest take on the subject . . . I use whatever works and doesn't break the bank. I often connect high end guitars and hand wired tube amps with the cheap free cables that come in the box with a Rondo or Harley Benton guitar. As long as a cable is perfectly functional and doesn't produce any discernible undesired noise, I'll use it.

In the end cables are like strings, picks, and tubes. Cables get yanked, kinked, stepped on, twisted, repeatedly coiled, and they're unavoidably going to fail and need to be retired and replaced. In my mind there's no more a forever cable than there is a set of forever guitar strings.

I wish I couldn't hear the extra 10+ feet in a cable, or a high capacitance cable, at least it's not as bad as using a speaker cable for your instrument or an instrument cable for a speaker cab. Can't tell you how many times I've set my stuff up and then hit a note or a chord and almost crapped myself because I couldn't figure out what neutered my high end, until I noticed I used or just altogether grabbed the wrong cable.

I still use cheapos, but I'm trying to treat myself to as many things with lifetime manufacturer warrantys and at least decent customer service as I can lmao. Especially smaller "boutique" type businesses, mostly because i like supporting them to help promote the idea of there being more of them. Plus I'm just so tired of always needing a new cable, or having to remember which way to plug it in so I don't short out and lose sound
It's been awhile since my instrument cable even had a brand associated with it.

I'd like to get a wireless system again, exept a decent one. I had one for a little bit but the inconsistencies with the connection led me to return it. It wasn't high end by any means, but it was pretty crazy that it was about on par with those little walkie talkies kids used to have that would work from one room to the next as long as the doors were open.

I've had the same set of d'addario regular lights on my V401DX since like 2016, they surprisingly don't sound dead or feel horrible yet. So as much as I want to try out all of the strings, I definitely have already found my forever source there unless they drastically change something.

I refuse to use ernie ball strings anymore after I had a bout of bad luck with them coming unwound at the ball end, or the winding just coming loose within the week I put em on.
And I used to just use any picks with a slight preference for tortex .73 or 1.00, but I was wearing 2 or 3 of my picks down into coin shapes every week, and then I tried their ultex ones, and they're pretty resistant to my specific abuse and I can get significantly more use out of them. Oh and I reeeeeally like the slight "clink" they have, it sounds kinda glassy.

Well it showed up, about to plug her in and see if sound goes through it. One of the best packaged packages I've ever recieved.

Opened up a nice proprietary/branded cardboard box to this.

Pretty sure that's a free sticker on there :D

Peeled that back to find a nice little branded drawstring bag, with my cable inside of a little plastic bag inside of the nice drawstring bag.

Also included was a nice little notepad with a thank you note written on the first page, a nice little informative brochure on their company and products, and a couple of promo codes for use with a couple of partner companies.

I'm about to fire up the fiddle and put the fire through it, but the real test with cables is time, so I guess someone remind me to update in like 5+ years

I can hear the difference between cables if played back to back. Of course my cables may be so crappy it makes a big difference. I had to really get used to using 10 footers after using 20s for years. Much more high end.

The Schaffer was the secret for Back in Black, so much so that they have made a pedal to simulate it. I wish someone would figure out how to do that for my HX Stomp: right now my AC/DC tone is based on a Marshall cranked to bejeebus.

Well I had to adjust the EQ on my amp for sure, I had the treble cranked, and boy the Thrash Factor in the Gibson is waaay brighter through the Orange than I first perceived, and the slight fuzzy overdrive sound I was experiencing when really laying into it, well it's a bit more muchier. I pretty much dialed everything on my EQ down a hair, treble got dialed back a few hairs though, and gain got dialed back a couple. Haven't had a chance to try through the focusrite, but I don't really go to the computer to check the nuances of my stoneage equipment

The cable's good n' sturdy, a nice level of stiffness, steadiness and flexibility. I didn't get any kinks or snags when I was jamming for a couple of hours earlier. The plugs feel well seated, secure with no play or wiggle in any way, and their fancy shrink tubing is well done and also quite sturdy. Don't know what material the sleeve is, but it seems pretty sturdy too.

Anyway, this combined with their general customer relations leads me to plan on some repeat business. Might try to phase all of my cables to Rattlesnakes.

I have used Mogami or Monster since forever. I do like the cloth cables though and I have a few of those.

Very nice. I like the gc lifetime warranty cables. They seem as good as any and when they fail i just swap em at gc 10 min away. If i lived 1+ hour away the math would change
