F1 in Miami. START YOUR ENGINES!

10 minutes to Go Time.

The Netflix series got me geekin' on the sport.

Miami's venue is interesting. Teams seem to be scrambling to get a feel for the track, the weather and flat-out vs. cornering strategy. I'll watch the first few laps, do some chores, play guitar and check the tele from time-to-time.

Long-time F1 follower, sitting on this one -actually scheduled and got a COVID booster on same time slot -my interest has moved to endurance.

It looks like(?) there were no major incident so far, with 10(?) laps to go.

Your first impression?

EDIT: Wait for Monaco 27-29 May! Been there twice in the 80s, crazy place to race.

Miami race thoughts... meh. Fun, though.

Monaco + 80's = lots of big hair and coke. :)

Not for me, 1983, I slept in my car in the hilly outskirts, for three days, getting strange looks from early morning dog walkers, while brushing my teeth.
I was just looking as some close-up pictures I took then. Amazing how simple cars were back then, compared to the electronic machines of today. Back then teams workstations (minimal pits are elsewhere, off-track) were open the public, very easy to take great pics.

Mickey is a diehard F1 fan.

Well, I have long been an F1 fan but this year I'm finding it difficult to built any interest.

And this is just when the series new owner, American, wants to make it popular in the US market, which influences the direction of the sport a great deal.
OTOH, the fact that Mercedes is not glued to the top this year is a big plus.
My own gripes with F1: too complex, costly, racing in countries with poor human rights, displacing classic race tracks off calendar.

@tlarson58 and others, check out the MX-5 Cup replays on YT, factory prepped Mazda Miatas, all the same, it's totally nuts!

We were going to go, but didn't get tickets fast enough. They went quick and the resellers were crazy expensive. Maybe next year. My son got me hooked through 'Drive to Survive' and from the few races I have seen, the show is definitely more entertaining than the racing.

My son has a racing rig(waiting on his birthday for a proper f1 wheel) and it is crazy fast. He does all the shifting and has most of the driving aids turned off. I can't even get off the line without traction control on. I make it about 3 corners and my car is totaled. I can't imagine driving a full size car at speed in Monoco. Those drivers are athletes for sure.

OK, here are some pics form Monaco 83 on this Google Drive folder:

EDIT: here is al ink that works, I think:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Highlights:

small car bodies, old names Lotus, Arrows...
small brake units
Minimal cockpit, controls - love the shifter knob!
luxury party atmosphere on boats in harbor, view of town, including the uphill climb from St Devote to the palace
Renault works team had a pop-out grill off the truck, chef working furiously!

The Saudi car may have been Keke Rosberg or his teammate, Jacques Lafitte. Keke won the race. Team hospitality suites were on the boardwalk, and one could leisurely walk around, saw Keke up close a few times, cigarette and drink in hand, and also a very young Nigel Mansell.

Miami: Silly "water feature," poor TV/camera placement (could have done with some crow's nests), but really fun looking track. It'll be fun to drive in F1 '22.

One of these days, I'll set my mind to finally building a racing gaming rig too. Looks like fun!

Why is that? This is the first season in quite some time that there has been some parity near the top and middle of the team hierarchy. I'm quite enjoying watching Ferrari and Red Bull being so competitive. I'm also thinking Merc will get it together at some point. Should be a three way shootout later on this season.

Aside: anyone else watching on the F1 subscription app? Where did last years' commentary booth team go? These guys suck. The old guy sounded piss drunk half the time.

Oldest son is a huge F1 fan. Red Bull. For Christmas the past 2 times it's been held, we've bought tickets to the Austin race for him and he's had a blast both years. And yeah--those drivers are very talented. And crazy nuts to do that.
