Facebook weirdness. I'm so pissed off.

So this morning, when I opened up Facebook, I was told that my account had been suspended. What the fuck? Why?

The reason they gave was that I was "impersonating a famous personality". Really? There's a famous personality named Paul Escamilla who lives in San Antonio who looks just like me and has all the same family members and friends as me? What the fuck.

So that pissed me off right away.

Then it said that I could dispute this account suspension if I want. Well, of course I want to dispute it.

It said the first thing I have to do is upload a video selfie. Seriously? Right there, I felt suspicious. But I went ahead and did it. They walked me through the process. I had to hold my phone at eye level and move my head from left to right to left to right three times. As I'm doing this, the phrases "deep fakes" and "identity theft" came to mind. I was really starting to get uncomfortable with this whole thing.

But then the dealbreaker came. Facebook said, "now that your video selfie is done, we need you to upload a photo of your driver's license or passport." I was like "no. fucking. way."

I will not do that. The video selfie was bad enough, but a copy of my driver's license or passport? Nope. Not gonna happen.

So, after almost 20 years, I no longer have my Facebook account. And I this whole thing has really freaked me out. Who reported me? Why did they believe this other person? What are they going to do with the video selfie? etc etc etc

Well, I suppose you are not really a pedofile?
According to BBC news, FaceBook is the largest pedofile website in the history of the internet.
I've been playing on the internet since about day 2 of its existance & FaceBook sure looks like a pedofile website.
Methinks you should be happy you've been rejected because you don't pass their muster as a pedofile. :D

I am not pushing a agenda here but... Enjoy. I was only on the FacePalm for a couple years and left that mess 6 or 7 or 8 years ago.
I'll say this Pesky, because it's you (you were in advertising!) Do you really need it? Or is it just all the cool kids and successful mothers love Dorito's and Mountain Dew from Taco Bell drive-thru Nissan perfect, safe, hashtag, halo word.

I finally realized what happened.

Over the Christmas season, I had been using a photo of a punk rock Santa Claus as my profile photo. He had a mohawk and facial piercing.

Yesterday, since Christmas is over, I decided to change my profile photo and just for shits and giggles, I uploaded this one:

Image

Now I know why my account was suspended, but it still pisses me off.

First, I didn't change my name to Gene Simmons.

Second, why not send me a warning that I had say, a few hours to remove the photo, or my account would be suspended?

Fucking bullshit.

My buddy used to go by Jack Torrance on there, famous through door picture and all.

I wouldn't be on there still if not for family and one group I participate in.

Facebook to me is basically the electronic equivalent of the bathroom stall wall. I still have an account but I did take about a 3 year hiatus. If they shut down my account it woudn't be worth my while to even be pissed.

Same thing happened to me. I was using Facebook for the market place only, no friends etc.. had a Clint Eastwood picture and got locked out from it. Fuck'em.

Maybe Rowdie Yates incites violence. Me and another moderator were both banned from uploading files, to the facebook page we made for the cnc guitar pickup winder.

I've never had an account and never had any desire to.

Full disclosure: I has a presence on there by proxy because I'm a member of several gigging musical acts that have profile pages.

Here's the part where I make the shameless plug about a new musical duo that I'm 1/2 of called MILLER & MAC, purveyors of genuine quality, extra stout blues rock. What that means in real world terms is that we play The Stones, Sonny Boy Williamson, Santana, Clapton, BB King, etc., while drinking liquid bread.

Like us on our Facebook page. :D Mods, I do believe we need a vomiting emoji. I just threw up in my mouth a little typing that.

Social Media is where you go to get manipulated, brainwashed, surveilled and data-mined in exchange for a dopamine trigger. I only ever had social media accounts for my businesses, because apparently that's a requirement in the 21st century. Ultimately, my personal Facebook account got hacked, and do you know how much Facebook cares about that? They care so much, they set up an "idiot loop" for people who have been locked out of their accounts.

What's an idiot loop, you may ask? It's when you go to report that you've been hacked, and they have you click on several links that take you on a tour of Facebook's policy pages, only to dump you right back where you started... All while constantly reassuring you about how much they care about security!

Social media is not your friend... And Instagram is just Facebook in disguise.

I was going to congratulate you, but I'm not yet sure that you have really escaped.

I lasted 6 months, ending in 04" ? Hated being in touch with everyone and their kin. Then was told by FB that someone from Spain was hacking my account. Thats when I shut-er down with a good excuse.
Never looked back. I hated always being informed about the next dozen social events. Or being asked to be "fiended" by people I dont know.

Liquid bread, eh? That's my favorite kind, along with rye.

I would also ad LinkedIN to that list - it's been very helpful to me in my job search but also is starting to fill up with trolls and the same kind of BS that Facebook is flooded with.

I gave Facebook the boot in 2012. It was bullshit back then and I've seen enough of their content shared elsewhere to know that it's worse now. I think it's done a lot of damage .

FWIW, I couldn’t even sign up for an account. They require that you use your real name, and my last name is an English word, therefore my real name cannot possibly be my real name. I contacted support, including links to my online bio with my employer at the time, plus Google results showing that it isn’t exactly a rare last name, but they wouldn’t budge unless I sent photos of all sorts of government ID’s. My response included a lot of four letter words but no photos.

I have never been a Facebooker for several reasons:

1) Who really cares if I had waffles for breakfast? I barely do!
2) Their privacy record is better than some hackers, but not by much.
3) It is a ginormous time suck.
4) I don't need the validation of "likes."

These are my reasons and mine alone. If you like it, great.

Really? I guess I shouldn't be surprised (and I hardly spend any time on LinkedIN either), but I would imagine that due to the nature of the platform, you wouldn't find much of the same bullshit that goes on at Facebook.

Yes, mostly in the comments of articles, but people also have been posting political and other agenda driven articles in some of the forum areas. There's a lot more spam from bogus/offshore recruiters than I remember in the past too.

At the end of the day, it's really just another social media site. Sure it's focused on business and career advancment, but it's still just people using it -and therein lies the problem ;-) AKA - there's idiots/a**holes in every demographic. The fact that most people use their real names and are there to make a positive impression certainly helps tone it down a lot, but there's also a lot of people who are out of work, disgruntled or just plain bonkers. And the aforementioned offshore scammers.

Besides trolls, data mining, unsolicited ads and and manipilation it's a great way to keep in touch with old friends. I only have 20 or so and delete/block/unfriend and have said adios to a few of them who got political.

I used it to publicize one of the four gigs we'd play each year (pre-covid).

Google has all the same info anyway. BTW, it looks as if I have a slew of Thai swimsuit models who are looking for my companionship.

Score.

It's amazing how many busty, scantily clad women there are out there with not a friend in the world who, out of the whole internet, want you to be the first one.
