It's one of my favorites. I loved Arthur C Clarke's work and I read all the books. The movie was beautiful although I find that I rarely rewatch it (I find it puts me to sleep).
I did see that article. Someone's having some fun. You know people are going to get lost looking for it.

Just to be "that guy"--It's not a monolith if it's made of metal. "Lith", indicates it's made of rock.

"It is illegal to install structures or art without authorisation on federally managed public lands, no matter what planet you're from," the department said."
EDIT: @uwmcscott The above was my favorite quote from the linked article.

Just a theory. Occam's Razor tells us we need not postulate aliens or demons. The motive of human greed can account for this.
Utah Department of Revenue needs money. They come up with the idea with the Utah Department of Tourism. They then arrange for the Utah Department of Pubic Safety Aero Bureau to haphazardly "find" the monument. The media publicizes the mysterious "discovery."
Authorities are "investigating" if further. Ha ha! That's a good one.
Authorities have not disclosed the location because they don't want to endanger explorers. Translation: "Please come to our State, stay in our hotels, eat, drink, buy stuff, and search for artifacts in the newest alien hot spot."

It's been found by the general public. It took around a day, if the reddit thread is to be believed.
The revenue thing makes sense, save for two things:
I know people who work for those two entities, and ... well, just no. That wouldn't happen.
Also, this thing is way out in a very inhospitable area. No (even somewhat) convenient places to separate people from their money, unless they're trying to bolster the revenue of search and rescue and/or medical facilities in the not-so-nearby area.
I think it's simply an art piece, one that someone really cared about doing right. According to a friend of mine who has more energy than brains, it's professionally set in there.
