Didn't you get the memo? "Country music" just means "pop that has slightly more fiddles and twangy accents" these days.

The clothing is, however, entirely appropriate for country music.

You might be thinking about "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?"

I generally avoid what the media (or music business, etc.) "brings" to me or presents me with. Been doing it for years, and I haven't missed out on anything worthwhile yet.

"Real" examples of all music genres still exist, they just don't make the headlines because they aren't promoted by the industry. They're doing what they have always done - trying to sell what they think the mainstream youth will like.

Seek out and support those artists who make the music you want to hear, and they'll keep going. Go throw love at the ones you would rather see performing at the CMTs. Chances are - they really need your love and support right now.

This is “new country” which is like formulaic pop but more geared towards flyover country.

I know very little about country, that's just something I heard on the radio. Even since moving into a rural setting I like to tune in to "country" music occasionally, just for kicks. But I'd say that even I can spot the modern, overprocessed, fake drawl songs and the more genuine, original stuff. I just don't hear it a lot. I think I can also hear "direct placement" in the songs - I hear things like "crown and sprite", "jack and coke", etc. and I just know someone got paid to write that.

I heard a guy singing it at the local bar before COVID, thought it was a bit shallow. Lots of call backs to ideas with no real development of any of them. It is basically typical radio country to me, like a ripoff of a Tim McGraw song done in a little different way.

I have seen a few amazing small-time acts like Ward Davis, Whitey Morgan, and Sturgill Simpson before he really blew up and had a little run at the Grammys a few years back.

Ward Davis was especially good because his bass player was one hell of a singer in his own right. He is a pretty good writer.


Whitey was just good old fashioned Honky Tonk.

Sturgilll is my favorite artist, he just put out a Bluegrass album re-imagining 20 of his songs that I have been listening to non-stop on my way to and from work all week.

I think the Geezinslaw Brothers summed up the situation with this tune
(which is not performed until the last couple of minutes of the video, so don't give up!)

By comparison, Sheryl Crow sounds more like country music:

Don't look at the video. Close your eyes and listen. Yup it's country.

Sound like bad modern country.

If you listen to the two back to back, WAP, a number one single, will make that Allen Cyrus collaboration seem like high quality music.

Wasn't this the biggest "country" hit of 2019?

I know Old Town Road was controversially kicked out of the country charts. But for real this was in the top 10 of Billboard for country.
