New monitor GAS.. i hate shopping for these darn things!

I got me a photo scanning setup and using an old, small monitor at the momnet, so it is time to get something a tad better.
Problem is, I do not know how to shop for these, get very confused in trying to pick something lower mid-range that is not solely optimized for gaming, or budget office stuff.
Gimme some clues.

Figure out what size, resolution and which types of connectors you need first - then go to Dell and find something middle of the road that meets all your specs. Not saying that's the only or best way to do it, but i've always bought Dell monitors and had very good luck. I'm sure a lot of them are OEM'd by someone eles, and I have no idea who, but they sell a crapload of them so I think they vet their producers pretty well.

Definitely decide specs first, or if you're not sure, and don't do any gaming, then just go with a 1080p monitor at whatever size you want. I like to check Techbargains.com for tech stuff, but you have to be patient when looking, as deals don't always appear every day, but there have been a ton of monitors listed on the site recently...

Techbargains is good, and dealnews also. Another good bet is go to newegg.com and give the an email address to sign up for their ShellShockers. They run a lot of monitors (and other stuff) at a rate of 2-8 product specials per day via an email sent to your address around midnight eastern time..
Not sure how particular you are but I mostly buy HDTVs and hook my computers to them these days. I am using three in different areas of the house. 1080p can be had stupid cheap (Check Sceptre brand at Walmart), and 4k can be had at great deals in smaller sizes (Sceptre and other brands). My bedroom setup is a 50" Sceptre 1080p I bought about 3-4 years ago for $215 out the door. Still works great. I have a mini keyboard/mousepad combo from Amazon and can run it all easily from my bed.

1080 is stupid low resolution these days. It’s OK for a tiny screen, but if I am buying a bigger monitor, I want enough pixels to fit stuff on it. 4K monitors are no longer big bucks.

With what is left of my brain cells, I do not need as many pixels as he younger fellas.
Same with musical notes and hearing!

Advantage of TV versus monitor?

They seem to work fine, I do a little gaming and they seem to work fine for that which is probably the most stress you can put a monitor to. I find them pretty cheap at Wally.

When your computer is doing something that will take some time, you can watch TV!

No over-the-air reception here, pretty far, and behind a hill from Boston, same with Providence, NYC, out of reach!

Usually you get more screen real estate for the same money. And more inputs, if that matters to you (it matters to me). As I mentioned above 1080p are stupid cheap, and 4K have come waaaaay down.
I am currently considering replacing my ancient 1080p 50" Plasma in the living room with a 65" Sceptre 4k which is currently $380 plus tax with free shipping at Walmart. In that room I sit about 9-10 feet from the screen. In my office a 39"1080p LCD works great at about 2.5-3 feet from my face. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be so the larger text at 1080p is useful to me.

Old thread, still haven't pulled the proverbial trigger, because, things.
A nod to our departed FoS.
I got this Dell 27inch Monitor - S2721D in my cart for 200 bucks:
1440p QHD, IPS, AMD FreeSync, HDMI, DisplayPort, Built in Speakers, VESA Certified
??
I assume the next jump up would be same in 4K, but I do not see much of a need?

At your age, your eyes can't even see 4k.

Check youtube there's a ton of videos about why you (no human) can see the difference because 4k is beyond what the human eye can see.
You might like this one, but there are doizens (hundreds?) more.
