OK, dudes, there is a 2007 Grand Marquis for sale at the corner gas station.

I always dreamed of driving such a machine - actually Crown Vic, but same guts(?)

This may be the time.

I love thise cars. Best cupholders ever.

That said, if you have winter, get snow tires -- they like to break the rears loose in slippery conditions.

They also wallow a lot over bumps, and have steering that is not exactly precise.

Then there is the fact that the rear crumple zone includes the gas tank. Don't get hit from behind. It is a 1979 platform after all.

Aside from those demerits, cop suspension bits make it better, and 2005- era Mustang rims fit.

This isn't a money pit. They are bone simple cars and parts are cheap.

You will never have trouble finding parts, every issue imaginable has been tackled already by the forums, and it may be a boat but it’s a boat with some swag. Plus it’s so big it may as well be a truck. You could probably fit a drum kit in there with the passengers. If I were to buy a Ford product that would be it for sure.

1. I wouldn't expect gas mileage to be great. Maybe 20 on the highway, no telling in town.
2. They aren't babe magnets, nor similar. Nothing screams "out of touch old-fogey" like an old oversized car.
3. In my big city environment you would never find an appropriately sized parking spot. Parking garages are especially problematic.

Maybe you could just rent one until that urge goes away. Is there a Rent-a-Wreck around?

I'd say the minute you buy it, you'll age at least 30 years....

As others have mentioned parts are cheap and pretty easily availble for most of the drivetrain if you are inclined to do some fixing up on it yourself. The mercury version probably has some luxury items/electronics that will be oddball and expensive to replace if they break, but then again electronics are pretty expensive for any car these days.

If you aren't DIY guy with cars,talk to any local cops you might know that were around during the Crown Vic years. Ask them if there are any local shops that serviced their fleet and take the GM there for a look. They could give you a good idea of what it will cost to make it a reliabile/safe/drivable ride.

Or you could just go Cleetus McFarland ( look it up on youtube ) and drive it into the ground as is.

Taxicab companies routinely run them to 4-500,000 miles with little maintenance. I want to say the transmission will go that far, although I have a friend with this car where it has failed well short of that mileage.

An exception I'm aware of is the intake manifold. That is a known problem area, but it is on top of the engine and easy to access.

Can't get much cheaper to maintain than a Panther based vehicle, especially if you replace the air ride with traditional coils.

Does that have the ford V8 in it? Its a great engine lots of throaty v8 zoom going on and yet they were pretty good on gas.

Technically, I think it is a Lincoln V8 4 cam 32 valve, I've gotten typically about 28 mpg with it.

I stand corrected, I have a girl friend who owns a Lincoln LS with this engine, I love driving it and the mpg amazes me for a V8.

I thought that the Lincoln used the Jag V8...oh well, 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
