And Cid, on a guitaristic note, apparently EVH Gear is getting ready to do a big dollar 5150 like they did for Frankie. They tested the wood in the original. Not poplar, not basswood.....
Swamp ash.
What in tarnation

Swamp ash kicks ass. I believe my 5150 is swamp ash. While my #1 (5150 knockoff) is poplar.
Those are my favorite woods. When I was much younger I preferred the slightly milder/sweeter tone of alder though.

Apparently the 1984 guitar was basswood.

I super do not like basswood. But man. My first Wolfgang had the maple cap and SPARKLED. Second Wolfgang (both Peavey's, same year) was just basswood and it was sooo dull.
It works for Ibanez shred machines I guess.

Go figure. My all-basswood Peavey Wolfgang is almost too wild in the high end, but is still full enough in the bottom end.
And I could sit and look at it for hours on end.
(Don't get me wrong, if the right deal comes up on a maple topped one.....)
My EVH Wolf Standard lacks bottom, but sounds great. Adding FR 1000 saddles and a brass block really made it pop. Now I just need a 1000-series baseplate to come available in black nickel. And a decent price on an OFR/Schaller nut in black nickel.

Only Wolfgang I have left is my BigPigDave Wolfie. Custom made maple top on alder.Rollin Hand wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 8:12 pm Go figure. My all-basswood Peavey Wolfgang is almost too wild in the high end, but is still full enough in the bottom end.

That one has a FR special and brass block. But it also has an ultra hot 22k A2 pickup (yes you read that correctly), plus a sustainer pickup in the neck, and an arcade button kill switch.
Between the soft Floyd, the brass, and the hot 22k, it sounds like a fkin elephant. Seriously it's honky. Even when studio musicians hear it they go WTF.
EXCEPT for that guitar, I'm spoiled on Floyd's too. My main 80s Eddie style axes have FRT4 bridges, STEEL blocks, and prototype nuts.
The steel block makes for sparkly sparkles. But I like it with a 9k A2 pickup. Bluesy, not so honky.
You can't hear the honk hear because it's mixed well (Ahmad Alkurabi / Deadsie)
But you can hear the sustainer harmonics, and then the arcade kill switch in the last 3 seconds. Lol.

...I never got to go back and do all the harmony parts I had planned for the main vocals though ;_;

I never knew, What I could do
To live a lifetime, Without you
Let's take it all away
Decisions made from yesterday
We'll make it all okay
But you'll forget us anyway
I never wanna let go
Let's make it so
Don't tell me that I'll never know
How to make you proud
I can live out loud
Life's not the same when you're around
Where does tomorrow go?
Another some day, you won't know
You'll find the sun will show
Another day, We'll take it slow
It was doomed to fail
So it might as well
I'll never escape my private hell
It's the lies you love
Can't face the truth
Murder happened last weekend
But I had no clue
(I had no clue)
(I have no...)
Like a rat in a cage
Not just a phase
I'm still not ready for all this change
Like a slap in the face
Then a kiss in it's place
The only time we feel whole is our embrace
Let's take it all away
Decisions made from yesterday
We'll make it all okay
But you'll forget us anyway
It was doomed to fail

So we've known 5150 was swamp ashRollin Hand wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 4:52 pmAnd it means I chose right when I did my 5150.PsychoCid wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 4:36 pmNeat!Rollin Hand wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 3:22 pm And Cid, on a guitaristic note, apparently EVH Gear is getting ready to do a big dollar 5150 like they did for Frankie. Apparently the 1984 guitar was basswood.
And that no Kramer production models were swamp ash (maple, poplar, alder much later)
But also that Eds guitars were factory Kramer equipment, not custom made (just custom tailored, basically)
---
So what does that add up to?
We believe the 5150 body came from TEST models during the transition
"Sports Inc" manufactured the original Pacer bodies and necks for Kramer. Otherwise they manufactured sporting goods like gunstocks and wooden decoys.
But as Kramer grew they needed to scale operations. Maple was both heavy and expensive so they began considering other options.
They landed on Poplar...but there were JUST A FEW experimental bodies in-between. There may have only been one, two, or three swamp ash Pacer bodies ever made.
Ed being Ed, the Kramer krowd suspects he wandered around the factory, found that oddball, and asked to use it. The rest is history.
Of course Kramer then outgrew Sports and expanded into ESP/Japan and LaSiDo/Canada for necks, before going full ESP circa 1985/86.
