My father has NEVER let me drive any of his cars. Not one.

Here he is with one of them. Really wish he'd let me take this for a spin in the Texas hill country. But nope.


He won't even let me drive his Jeep, even though I've never had a single accident in all my years of driving. Not even a fender-bender.

If you like talking about sports cars or bull-fighting, you'd get along famously with him. He can talk for hours, days, weeks, about either.

Getting back on track, as it were—I could be happy with a 26 ft RV on a long trip around the Southwest, but my biggest druthers is to hit the road in Mexico. I wouldn't need a car, though, just an unlimited supply of tickets, because the Mexican De Luxe buses are so cool—like being on a plane, including movies dubbed into Spanish—first one I saw was a James Bond, then Miss Congeniality II, then last year going from Puebla to Oaxaca we watched Thor Ragnarok and How to Train Your Dragon—a surreal experience, my friends!
But really, traveling Mexico by bus and short haul air is an experience not to be missed, and especially the kamikaze taxi drivers in Puebla …
Oaxaca, wonderful food and crafts, Mexico City one of the greatest cities in the world, cultured, funky, astounding architecture both ancient and modern, exhilaratingly insane traffic, galleries, museums—can't wait for this crap to be over and I can go back.

interesting you should mention that. The drive who was with my dad raced Corvettes at LeMans.

his gearbox failed at the 16th hour.

Only 14 cars finished, out of a field of 41.

The winner was the Ford GT40, which fended off the mighty Porsche 917s.

Nah. He's never let any of my three brothers ever drive one either, and they all live in Texas. He's just a selfish person. These are his toys and only he can play with them. Oh well, they ARE his toys.

My dream trip has always been to see a ballgame in every major league park in a single season. We'd hit whatever attractions and MILB games we could along the way. The wife wants an RV or truck and trailer, so maybe I'll get to do that someday.

Would have to stop in my hometown and then spend a few days on the Third Coast.

Ima go small here. 1988 missed my chance to see Roy Buchanan in a small club not too far from where I lived at the time. Was full capacity when we got there still hours before the show. Roy was dead a few months later. Have always regretted not getting in.

The GT40 was the slowest lap I have ever done, a late friend's car, a proper race machine, and worth well over £1 million, fastest was a Porsche GT2 RS,
Sadly Julian passed away a couple of years after that photo was taken. He was a real gent.
I've done about 450 laps, and managed to never have an accident, only one of our guys has, and it cost us £1000 to get his licence and registration back!

They say never go out on the track when it is wet. One weekend we were there, it drizzled for about 10 minutes. How bad can it be?, I thought . . .
Scariest 13.4 miles of my life ensued, every time I touched the throttle, brakes, or steering, I slid.

If you have ever seen Top Gear, UK car show, then Sabine Schmitz taught one of their presenters to drive the track, and then did it faster in a van. I have lapped, with her driving a BMW M5, twice, and knowing the huge track makes a massive massive difference. So many blind crests, and elevation changes, along with many many camber changes,

The 13 mile plus track has a cafe half way round at Adenau, and it's possible to get onto the track there, although that means you miss half the circuit! A funny video is of these guys that turned up on a damp day with a cold car, and spells out how dangerous the track is . . .


I wish the F1 guys still used the full track, instead of the tiny F1 modern track, it's a huge challenge, but deemed far too dangerous, so the German government decided to open it up as a one way, public toll road . . . .
