The Toby Keith post got me thinking. I was in a band that played nothing but outlaw country and I. loved. it. It was some of the most fun I've ever had with a group of guys. Here's one of my favorites. Do you have a country tune that gets your blood pumping?
One country song?

A post with unique timing, Tommy!
Growing up either in the Philly and LA suburbs, my only exposure to country music was Hee Haw and an occasional Johnny Cash tune. Which I actually appreciated, but was destined for rock and pop genres.
A month ago a friend heard an 80's 45 of mine and started to play some country licks over if and said, "you know this would make a timeless 90's type country song." Then he asked me to begin rerecording it as such.
So, I borrowed a bunch of CDs from the local library and am about to immerse myself in it to see how I need to adapt my song. I literally just got back. I am looking forward to the responses and will take any suggestions.

I listen to the Outlaw Country channel a lot on Sirius. I remember back in the 70's when Willie, Waylon and others released the Outlaw record. I played that thing to death but I was more a a rock guy. They bridged the gap with the rockers back then.

I am not a coutry guy, but even a casual perusal of some of the outlaws' life stories will tell you that they are /were as rock 'n' roll as it comes.
As far as favourite country songs go, this one takes me back to The Bree's Inn on campus at Carleton University here in Ottawa. The DJs would close out a Tuesday night there with this one, partly because so many of us there were friends, and partly because the cafteria downstairs from the bar was called "The Oasis." I think you know where this is headed...
I also like Alabama way more than I should, but good songs are goods songs.

My current band covers this song! Even though ours doesn't have the agnst that the original does, its always a crowd favorite (the two times a year we have a gig). I'm the guy in the 314 shirt holding down the I and V bass notes.

I was fortunate enough to attend Jerry's wake held by the session players on Music Row.
This was the song that closed the show..
Jerry's grandson did the vocal.
It was all the guys on the original recording,
with the exception Jerry wasn't there.
It sorta brought a tear to my eye...

You Never Even Called Me by My Name was written by John Prine and Steve Goodman. John is my favorite songwriter of all time. One of my life's regrets is not seeing John live. I wrote a tribute song to him when he passed and I play it out all the time.

I knew it was written by Steve Goodman but have always thought of it as a David Allen Coe song because he was the first to record it. I've heard Waylon & Merle Haggard both do it.tonebender wrote: ↑Thu Feb 22, 2024 5:57 pm You Never Even Called Me by My Name was written by John Prine and Steve Goodman.
