Gearlist: A tele, a bass and a bunch of other stuff.

This is our first gig in a year and we're really looking forward to it. We ran with the happy hour idea in the past to great success. We're expecting a large following of locals at 6:00 followed by a healthy walk-in crowd of tourists after the dinner hour (the bar is on Main Street). I'll eat my santa hat if we don't pack it by 6:30 and stays that way until 9:00.

The set list is a little long. I suggested eight songs per set, but our durmmer is sticking with 12. We practice every Thursday but we're throwing one in on Monday just to tighten up and pack up what we need. Everything, regardless of how you've heard it on the radio, is played in somewhat of a up-tempo bluegrass/country style - unless it's rock n' roll. Then it's played, well... rock and roll-like. I'll be playing bass on 70% of the songs.

Here's a topic that reaches way back to the old forum: We'll be using music stands. I remember that post well: Guys were either understanding or screamed blasphemy. It is what it is.

I made this flyer two weeks ago and will follow up with something catchy this week. The bar made some professional posters but I haven't seen them.

Extra Mustard is an excellent band name. Love the set list and I hope it goes well. I have a gig on the 21st too in a place I have played about 300 times.

Rocky Top was written in 1974 by Felice & Boudleaux Bryant and has earned them (and their descendants as Felice & Boudleaux are both dead now.) over $1,000,000 per year since. It is easier to name who has NOT recorded it rather than who has.

Great band name, great set list.
I forgive you for using a music stand.
I'd love to be able to walk into that venue that night and surprise the hell out of you.
What's a last minute ticket from North Carolina to Steamboat Springs Colorado cost anyways?
More importantly, anybody know somebody locally who can babysit for 13 cats? Some need medications, some require twice daily insulin shots, I have a bengal with pica who will shred every piece of paper in the house if not monitored, and a few have, let's just call it, "potty issues."

I use a small computer mounted on my mic stand or a tablet. It is mostly for newer songs that I have not memorized yet. I do not look at it much. I actually think I am getting better at remembering lyrics which seems crazy at my age. I have a fake monitor speaker that my tablet can sit on too and it just looks like a monitor speaker. A lot of pros use a teleprompter, I have even seen handwritten or typed words on paper taped to the floor. No matter how well you know a song or how many times you have sang it flawlessly there is always that moment where a brain fart hits. Sometimes I get distracted by something going on in the audience and lose my train of thought.

Executive summary: We played really well. 'Best ever, I'd say.

- Great crowd. We started at 6:00 playing to 10 people but quickly had 30-35 bodies in the room at any one point. The bar holds 25 comfortably so it was a kick to play to a packed house.
- The door person ran out of the 60 santa hats. It was fun to see everyone wearing them.
- The music: 27 songs. Three hours of music with a 15-minute break.
- The music stands and books were a welcome crutch.
- The soundman placed our volume at conversational level. I made a gritty recording and there's a din of people talking and laughing. This was a good thing in my opinion. People were enjoying themselves and clapped at all the right times.

This isn't my favorite song, but it's one of the last ones that can be heared clearly before the crowd drowned out the little Tascam recorder I used. That's our lead singer, not me. I wouldn't do that to you. :)

- Only one song was a complete trainwreck. We just got off to a horrible start. Wrong keys, missed changes, etc. A third of the way in I found a place to end it and did so to the relief of everyone in the building.
- My bass fingers were trashed at the end of the night. I had to use a pick for the last song.
- My leads were terrible. My hands were shaking and clammy. I don't think too many people noticed, though.
- One of the nicest compliments we received was from a friend who catches many of our sporadic performances. He said that we sounded much tighter and looked like we were having fun.

This is probably more info than you wanted to know but it was a good way for me to process the evening. Thanks for the interest.

Skinny-but-long venu. Lots of good vibes from the crowd.

Somehow, I missed this earlier. Glad it went well and all had a good time, Tommy!

I started music (drums) at 9 years-old, so sheet music was my foundation. Guitar kicked in at 14, but almost entirely by ear and improv. Music stands are cool, as long as they become transparent to the connection with the audience. IMHO, the band becomes wallpaper to the audience when they build shields and then stare at their fretboard or the floor for the gig. Eye contact, pointing, smiling, waving, dancing, laughing at mistakes, is all part of the connection which makes the music stands go unnoticed.

Congrats on the good gig!
I'm (the drummer) trying to get everyone to use an ipad strapped to their mic stand.
There are cool apps that you can program with words/chords and order them ....One app is by ultimate guitar...I think another one is called Setlist....
I played with a guy earlier in the year and he had a bluetooth pedal hooked up and he could scroll the song with his foot via the pedal.

I am a fan of not having music stands. I will permit an ipad sort of device.
Those teleprompters look cool but they're pricey.....no?
I see Sweetwater sells them.
