Not a pleasant topic, but looks like I'm heading to the Layoff line along with probably a lot of others where I work. Already actively seeking other employment as I knew this was possible/probably but it kicks you in the teeth when it actually happens. Had over 20 years of service too. I understand i'm not the only one in this situation but it's the first time down this road for me. Looking to share not only in the pain with others that might be in the same boat, but maybe even some resources for opportunities. I've been an IT/AV/Learning tech guy pretty much for the past 20 years, both as a practitioner and a manager. I know there are some other IT folks in this crowd too.

Sorry to hear it, man. I know how it feels and I'm sorry it's happening to you.
I got furloughed on April 3. Plans were to have those of us that got furloughed to come back in 8 weeks. That was overly optimistic, I think.
I make fun of KY for a lot of things, but they've got their shit together on getting unemployment payments to people who have been Covid-affected.

I'm with you, laid off a couple months ago -. Part of the deal was I was enrolled in and supposed to pass about 180 hours of auto sales training.
If you have ever seen an auto-sales training vid, they are much like any other sales training vid, but with a presenter who seems to be massively dosed with high grade cocaine.
They are made to create INTENSE excitement about ALL THE SWEET SWEET CABBAGE you can make, if you fill up your trick bag to close!close!close those dealz and grab it all up.
I got sick to my stomach about 30 seconds in on every single one I watched. Joe fuckin' Verde./
Then the product training vids, "For 2020 the ZOOMOBILE 600 features hi-style black 18" alloy rims to connect with the sporty youthful auto consumer, this is what they demand and we are here to offer it the what they want for their hi-tech lifestyle." And the tests. Oh god the module tests. I'm gonna figure something out over the summer. I was asked outright by my boss what my plan was this morning, and it was pretty plain to all in the conversation I wasn't going back to the dealership floor, and it was a six day a week gig. No mercy. They did want to keep me on for some limited social media stuff but that's not going to pay much for bills, but it's something and we are on good terms. Maybe I'll have to work that scheme a bit harder and pick up a few contracts.
It's a whole new ballgame - and on top of the Covid crap, I live in an area that is a major petroleum-producing realm, so with oil prices in the toilet it's a monstrous double whammy on the local economy, businesses closing, people dropping off keys for houses and trucks at the bank and walking away. I'd sell my house and move but we'd take such bath on it it's crazy. Then I'd have a damn mortgage again. My wife makes pretty good, she's a bit frustrated where I am, but we're paying the bills. Two kids in post-secondary, they might not even be going to school for another year. Trying to plan for that.... Everything is upended.
Anyway, now's your chance to become that rock god immortal for realz! my heart goes out to you Scott. 20 years is a long time at one place, that looks real good on a resume. I hope you have built in some kind of safety net, over that time?

Thanks TV - and all of you. Yeah, it really sucks but i'm trying to move past the sucky, hate the administrators, blow up the internet phase because I know that won't help. I'm exploring multiple options and leads already. And I have worked for the state university system for those 20 years, so I will get a 60 day notice and I have some substantial accrued benefits that I can keep or cash out too. But you are right - it's an ominous sign overall when even state university systems start laying off people en-masse, especially those of us that provide essential services like Networks, communication platforms ( VoIP, video etc ). Dude, I hear you. I could easily work from home. No sweat.
Problem is I work for a company that supplies ice cream to amusement parks, zoos, sports arenas, etc. Until those are reopened (safely, I hope) then I'm stuck on the couch.
On the plus side, I have added about 15 extra pounds.
Sorry to hear it man. I work IT for our local hospital as part of the state healthcare safety net system. I’m coming up on 20 years also. Unless something changes I expect some layoffs even in healthcare (during a pandemic). We are unionized though so I am fairly safe which is the only time I ever really think about the Union.

So sorry for those getting hit. This thread has the potential to get very very big unfortunately. I hope the recovery takes off like a rocket and you all have a selection of killer jobs soon.
I think it was 60% of the people for a few weeks that were all wanting to stay locked down and most politicians. Mostly people with "essential" jobs or retirement checks it seemed. I'm in IT and very secure until I'm not. Everyone is downstream of something. Retirees should have been screaming to the younger people "get out there and generate tax revenue" "Hurry up and get bat flu and get over it so herd immunity saves my old butt"

that sucks, man. hopefully as an IT guy you can get something relatively easier than others. it's going to be not easy now though.
i work in the family entertainment business, as does my wife. she was furloughed on April 13th completely, and I'm on 50% pay. my 2019 (that's right, 2019 for completed work) bonus payment was also suspended. company's plan is to get everyone back to work August 1st. unfortunately, they are predicting sales this year to reach 2014's level and next year in 2021 to reach 2017's level. that means there's no way my wife is coming back and i doubt my pay will be raised any time soon as well. i probably won't ever see my bonus for completed work in 2019.
apply for unemployment, we got it pretty fast here. it won't replace your salary but the extra $600 from federal (for at least another month or two) plus your state unemployment should help keep you afloat.
