Well, shit.

Finally get a job I like and the universe decides to kick me in the nuts. No chance of going back this year, so they've just made furloughs permanent. They're hoping to rehire everyone at some point, of course, but cutting everyone loose now just makes it easier on the company.

Hopefully I'll be back there next year. We'll see.

Could be worse, could be on a ventilator.

Sorry about that. The amusment park biz will probably take a while to rebound. Ice cream , right? Maybe have them hire you back to spearhead selling direct to customers. I wont be going to big crowds soon but I'll eat ice cream :)

Sorry to hear that Jeff. Got the permanent layoff notice last Monday myself after 20 years of service. I'm looking at it as a challenge and an opportunity, and people are starting to at least talk about hiring. A couple of the HR/recruiters I've spoken have said that plans for hiring are already taking place in some industries.

Given what I do, graphic designer, I live in what is probably the worst place possible. Excellent planning on my part.

Direct to customers for us is very difficult. We do it, but it requires dry ice because Dippin' Dots have to be at least -35 degrees. So, it's really only available in places that can have our proprietary freezers to keep it cold enough. Direct sales are pretty minimal.

Same to you my friend. I am also currently about halfway through an MBA degree and taking full advantage of some of the connections I've met there - hoping it might open some doors that would not have been open before.

I am definitely finding out that you need to seek employment in much more creative ways right now - good jobs won't ever make it to a website or a newspaper job posting. AKA - who you know is even more important than ever.

Sucks for you man. I found out my temporary is permanent too about ten days ago. Didn't like the job much anyway. It was a huge sigh of relief when they let me go due to COVID. Graphic design can be done most anywhere Jeff. Get your shingle out there - you are only as good as the work you can show, and I've seen some nice stuff from you. or Work on your painting. That beach shot you showed? Commissions? One thing I am finding some nice little side gigs for is social media posts also. just some ideas. I wanted to be a rock star, but well... didn't have good looks, enough drive or talent... so, we find other ways. As we say up here in the Canadalands.. just give 'er.

Honestly, at this moment I'm a little to depressed/pissed "deprissed?" to think ahead. I'm going to take a couple of days to wallow and then see what's what.

Thanks for the kind words, though.

I felt the same way, still do at times. I had to let half of my team go too, that was almost worse than getting the news myself.

Gotta look forward though....there will be stiff competition but also companies looking to grab the good ones first. It’s rough but you’ll get through.

Sorry to hear about this JB. Graphic designer is a job that can be and often is done remotely though, and there's lots of freelance work out there that's worth exploring too. I'm hopeful you'll be able to land something good fast :).

Nobody is usually unhappy when they get ice cream either! Great job!
My youngest daughter worked at a local ice cream place for several years as a kid. She loved that job.
Get an ice cream truck! 8-)

Looks like you have an opportunity to change direction. If your design work is as good or better than the watercolors I've seen consider some freelance gigs. Hell if you can sell cold call some small business like diners than could use a fresh look for the menu, small print shops could make use of your talent as a freelancer. Theres money out there just looking for you to find it. Best of luck bud.

Near Paducah. There's nothing in this area. A cultural and technological dead zone. And I'm apparently cursed to live out my life here.

Could be worse like east St. Louis. Then your the armpit of St Louis AND live in Illinois. But you're right not much there unless you farm, are a redneck hillbilly or guide for fish on the big lake. Used to work with some brothers and their uncle Crash years ago. Thet were something else.
