** Update **

The judges sample every submission. (?!)

Man, I didn't even add eggs. I thought that it was a decorating division. Who needs to sample/judge desserts from a box?

Routt County pop: 25,000. Fair highlights include awesome 4H/FFA husbandry competitions, exhibition hall, demolition derby and a big rodeo. That's it. No rides. No funnel cakes.

My first foray into the savage county fair baked goods scene (Division: Cake Mix/Decorating/Open):

Good eatin'.

I agonized over "Brussels Sprout" (singular) vs. "Brussels Spouts." There's only one sprout per serving (ha) so I went with the singular. I am proud to say that I have not ingested a Brussels Sprout in 33 years.

I love Brussel Sprouts but I can't imagine Brussel Sprouts & Lima Beans on a cup cake. <barf>

Incidentally, I have always heard that if you are introduced to Brussel Sprouts at too young an age you will never like them.
I was 35 years old when they were first served to me & I've loved them ever since. :D

That should hopefully win you some creativity awards if nothing else! We have a similar county fair here in my county - and even though we do have rides and such, we still have a full complement of 4H and cooking/canning/craft competitions.

I'd definitely give them a try, i'm a Brussels' fan for sure. My 2 go to recipes are roasted sprouts along with parsnips and sweet potatoes ( cubed, olive oil and salt/pepper ) or fried with bacon and red onions.

My oldest son used to take frozen mixed vegetables and pick out/eat all the lima beans while they were still frozen as a snack.

I'm concerned for your family.
An insider told me that one of the cupcake judges commented "[eating] that was like siphoning gasoline." I feel kinda bad for them. I honestly thought it was only decorating.
