You've already broken the cycle by building your own. My guess is your wife just doesn't understand that logic clearly enough yet.

The answer to this conundrum is to stop buying new pedals and buy a new guitar instead.

I'm only sad about the dozens of unused pedals I already have. I guess I have to buy another.
