Garage Bike Storage

Ok, so tomorrow I plan to spend some time organizing my garage so that our third winter in this house will see the cars (Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Sienna) actually enter the garage.

My wife and I both have bicycles and I am trying to sort out the best way to store them. Key details:

• Two car garage without a ton of extra room;
  Separate garage doors;
  Shelves along the left wall;
  Nothing along the right wall;
  A couple of storage cabinets along the back wall, likely along with a deck box;
  10-foot ceilings in the likely usable area;
  A whole bunch of other stuff to store and no shed.

I am thinking hooks on the back wall to hold the bikes semi-flush against it and up a bit. Anyone have other, better ideas? Things get tight in a hurry with the van in there.

The boys and I made this over winter break last year. So happy to not be tripping over bikes now.

I threw ours up on the wall with a couple of hooks, slacken off the bars and rotate in line with the frame and front wheel.

Bingo, quick, and cheap.

I'm not saying you need this per se, but I know in places like NYC where space is very tight people will store bicycles with contraptions that take up ceiling space (which it sounds like you have).

@exonerv is pretty good with bike storage ideas and organization in general. Pretty sure he has used some type of ceiling mounts in the past.

Yeah, the ceiling mounts make me nervous, but I might have to go that way. I'll see how the garage shakes out tomorrow. I am also going to install new lighting in there, so the ceiling space could get eaten up too.

I am also looking at tire storage. And I need room for the mower. A shed is in my future, but not this year.

I have a hodge-podge of hooks in the ceiling and wall studs but would love some inspiration for a good way to do it myself. Also have a fairly small 2-car garage. I had somewhat of a challenge when I got my current vehicle ( a crew cab F150 with a 6'5' bed ) to just get that to fit and move a bunch of other crap around. I also inherited our troops canvas outfitter tent/stoves/poles as our storage unit was sold. Got about 6 or 7 bikes all over the place and a snowblower, lawnmore, rototiller...it's a mess for sure!

Seriously, hooks screwed into a stud will do just fine. If not, a tarp and a springtime tune-up will work as well.

Well, I did have one inspiration last night: no one says the wooden shelves along the left wall have to stay. That would open up a lot of space fo bikes and the like.

I am 99 percent sure that our garage wouldn't fit your truck. Width wise, it would be tight to get my wife's Sienna through the door.

Lots will take care of itself if/when we get a shed built. Then the mower, rakes and all of that head to the back yard. Same for when we get a deck built (we currently have an interlock patio being overrun by weeds and a set of interlock steps best described by "well, they ain't getting any safer...") and have a place for the deck box.

I spent 4 hours yesterday trying to get things cleaned out and rearranged, but you know what? It still needs cleaning and rearranging. The wheelbarrow will have to ride out this winter in the backyard as it stands to allow space for the mower.

Then there is my kids' inflatable water slide....it comes with a bag for storage. I cannot get it into the bag. I suspect only someone who works in the factory that made the damned thing could maybe do it. Now it is in a big pile on the deck box in the back of the garage. Grrrrrrrr.

At any rate, I will buy some hooks and the like and see what I come up with.

I am 99 percent sure that our garage wouldn't fit your truck. Width wise, it would be tight to get my wife's Sienna through the door.

I had to perform a proof of concept before actually making the purchase. I have just enough room to fit the lawnmower/snowblower on the back wall, with about 2 inches space between it and the front bumper, and then about 10 inches clearance in the back. If I leave the the long tow bar in the receiver hitch the garage door won't close

On the flip side I got rid of a lot of crap when I cleaned it out that time. The bikes hang literally right over the front of the truck so if a hook did come out of the ceiling it would be an expensive propsition, but the have been there for 10 plus years and still holding strong. Just make sure you screw into the center of a joist and check them for tightness from time to time.

That is the joy -- getting rid of shiii....stuff I didn't remember I had, and lot I don't need, or even want.

It's weird -- I like order in a lot of ways, yet let stuff fall to disorder all the time (let's not discuss my basement...).

At any rate, a run to Canadian Tire for storage hooks will happen this weekend.

And I am starting to think about an Ego mower that folds and stores on the wall.
