What kind of bull:poo:-tomfoolery am I up to last night and this morning?

Well the Vinegaroon concoction I attempted to make and use was a fail. Not going to bother showing that. I think my solution was bad. I forgot in important step in the making, that is dewaxing the steel wool. Did you know steel wool comes waxed so that it doesn't rust? Now I do.

Anyway, I went with about eight or ten drops of black dye thinned into an oz and a half of IsoPalkyhol, and I got me a decent grey alright. Not bad. I learned me how to make gray, (which is apparently about difficulty level 8 on vegtan leather, according the leatherworker forum).

Image

Hard to get dye this thin even, and there was some sort of a driftwoody effect with the original leather colour showing through. got a bit of the black fade from the edges happening, and I wiped the skulls a bit with black dye too.

Then, I dried it overnight, and in the sun for an hour this morning. Now we can all see those little bits inside the aces that didn't take the grey very well, still showing the original leather "pink." Well that was driving me a little crazy. So, I grabbed an old toothbrush, some "Antique paste" goop, (dabbled few drops of red dye into just to warm it up a bit) and proceeded to "antique" the middle zig-zag and all inside the Aces.

Image

I'm not sure if I'm pleased or not, but it's kind of cool in it's own special way. I think once I neatsfoot it all up, everything will get a tad darker and blend real nice. Then I can finish it with a bit of a shine, should be just fine and more importantly ...saleable. The zig-zag is a bit more apparent in this photo than in real life. Brightened the photo a little bit so it stands out a bit more.

I like the color it ended up. Like a deep, polished stained finish. It would go well with a dark brownburst guitar.

I think as leather finishes do, it will also lighten up over time, particularly the middle strip, so it will gain some extra character as it clocks the road miles.

Over the next couple/few days I will be revisiting a design series I have not given enough attention to... the Well-Hung "Warrior" Series. Previous straps in this series were made with light ivory buckskin suede. At the time I got several requests for a darker tobacco suede version, so here we go!

Image

These will include the bone pipe-beaded chest armor, (really more a decorative nod to it), a seed-beaded rosette, and plenty of dangly fringe.

Edit/addition, here's how they are coming

Image

Just down to finishing touches on these... each includes a "medicine" pocket underneath the bone pipe beads, forward fringe should not affect strings,
but if it does, easily trimmable. There is fringe on the back as well.

Ace of spades got sniped by a forum member. It was a cool one, but until I figure out how to escape so much pounding, (it actually affected my arm adversely), I won't be doing that again soon. I am looking at getting an arbor press, figure that'll be a good thing to have in the shop.

Not sure about it, but I am giving it a try. I get pressure from people to start this nearly every second week, but have so far resisted. However, if I want to keep doing this as a job, and grow the brand meet more customers, I need to expand my social reach by some magnitude, Facebook is as good a place as any to start.

Be on the lookout for extra content not shown here etc... starting a page from scratch is a hard hill to climb, and I'm still learning the ropes over there. If you are a Facebooker, I'd surely love to be there in your daily feed and if you wish. Please visit, follow, like & share with any other guitar-minded friends who you know may benefit from being Well-Hung

I looked at it but I do so much work by desktop, and Instagram seems to be phone centered for some reason... probably good reason. I felt more comfortable starting here... thanks Zach!!!

Are you familiar with the Guitar Nerds podcast? One of the guys on it, Joe Branton, was looking for a custom length "Ethically Made" strap. Don't you do a lot of recycled plastics and stuff? I linked your Reverb page. They're pretty popular. Might be good to look him up! https://www.facebook.com/joe900

I have Instagram and FB pages, and I get far more interaction (and inquiries) from Insta. I eventually stopped posting on FB at all, except to link those two accounts together.

When I post to Instagram, it spams the same post to my FB account. Insta also allows a far better reach without having to pay anyone for it. I only have around 200 followers, but my engagement and views are far higher as a norm. I really don't put much effort into the page (only post when I'm working on something in the shop...).

It's all about using effective hastags, posting multiple pics at a time, and using the Stories function to keep eyeballs on your account. The longer you can keep people staring at your pages, the better the algorhythm likes you and shows your images more frequently. (Hint: people like bright colors and bewbs.)

With your work being so visually appealing combined with your background in getting eyeballs to stay put where you want them, I'd say Instagram is worth a real look. Find a few filter apps you like (I can recommend some if you like), take solid pics, and answer anyone who messages you. I have a feeling that promoting your work will have very positive results for your side hustle here.

Let me know if you decide to do this, I will feature your work on my page. That might not be a huge jump start, but it won't hurt.

Hey, Imagine a black leather strap with a great surface texture, detailed adding a bit of a glow. Only when you get in nice and close you will see that that texture is made up

HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of finely detailed rose impressions. Was going to call this short run series Rosae Mortis, which is some old language stuff for... you can probably guess.

But I think I will go with None More Goth instead. I'll put some more pics up on Facebook. please go see, like and follow. Jeez it feels whorish asking that, but I am becoming cognizant of the social media reality, guitar forums are awesome, but a bit of a closed network.

Image

Dang I love this strap, even if it is black.

After some ribbon arrived yesterday afternoon, I set to work today on a custom for RC in Nebraska! He was looking for a strap in my "1969" design style, 3" wide, rolled edges, padded ribbon on leather base. A real elevation of the old 2" wide hippie strap style.

Before beginning, I dropped the ribbon down on some base leather choices for him, tough project... note the three photos he sent me of his bass all show a different colour LOL! How do you work with that? I thought maybe reds would help pop that tort, but seeing it in person, didn't like the effect. Also tried some blue/teal coloured leather, but it wasn't worth taking a photo... too green, made me feel kinda nauseous :?

Image

Tried on some brown leathers too, to confirm the choice we already made at this point.

Image

Getting that ribbon laid down on the base leather strap (we chose black), is one of the harder parts... keeping it centred! Id' be lying if I said I always got this perfect.

Image

Beautiful ribbon, a little bit of gold sparkle - I think this robin's egg blue will really pop on that bass. The ribbon also has a bit of a brown/black flipflop effect. Here we have it assembled with the padded inserted, the lining attached ready for sewing

Image

Here you can kind of see the flip/flop, after sewing is completed. Just some extra stuff with the nose and tail, strap is 75% done at this point.
Extra pics up on the Well-Hung F-book page too.

Image

Going to be ready to ship tomorrow... soon to meet it's new owner.

Remember a couple of weeks ago I asked if anyone here at AGF had any spare riffage/recording kicking around clogging up your hard drive hidden away from appreciative ears? I just needed something for a little music bed. This is what I was talking about. I was surprised I had no replies here on AGF. Thankfully a real nice fella at The Tone Rooms had this in my hands in barely three minutes after I asked this morning and it's super bitchy!

Ok for those of you who STILL have not liked, followed, shared on the F-book. Please do.
This is the kind of thing I will be doing more of there. Along with some other things you can see which I have not shown here.

I reckon it earned his trust. Hell, it's the cowboy way. He's so jacked up, he already sent me a that Ghost Riders soundtrack to work by.
So much fun.
