I made this video as a demo for the "Mosstone Beatle Bass", and intended to include it when I re-posted the project thread from the old forum (which I'm in the process of doing right now), but I put so much work into this song over the last several weeks I didn't want to wait until I was finished with the arduous process of reconstructing the original thread before I put this out in the world.

This is a bassline that thoroughly intimidated me for most of my playing life. I've tried to learn it in the past, but I just could never get through the whole song. It's so smooth, and loaded with finesse, and nuance, and it's got such a loose groove to it, it's hard to get a handle on it. The unexpected rests and the notes he doesn't play are just as important as the ones he does... and he never plays anything the same way twice!

It took me a couple of weeks just to learn this song all the way through, and then a couple more to learn how to play it right. I made double-damn sure I had this song under my fingers before I even thought about recording it. Recording is another thing that's been intimidating to me, as well as making videos, so I figured as long as I'm already doing stuff that I find intimidating, I might as well have a go at those things too.

I constructed the backing track myself from the actual isolated tracks from the original song, minus the bass and vocal tracks.I came across a great wealth of Beatles songs broken down into their individual tracks on YouTube, so I just downloaded the video and put the tracks I needed back together in Audacity... It's the closest I'll ever get playing with the Beatles!

Of course YouTube blocked it the second I uploaded it, but I posted it as "unlisted", which you should still be able to view with the link. I'm sure you'll let me know if it doesn't work. :)

I didn't do a whole lot of mixing. I left the levels of the original tracks alone, thinking that they were probably where they were supposed to be. I didn't want to get into re-mixing the entire song (though listening to the video now, I kinda wish I tweaked the gain a little in spots on the guitar track).

On the engineering front, I put most of my work into matching McCartney's tone (a couple of week's worth... having too many options and an obsessive ear is not a good thing), and blending it into the mix. I'm not accustomed to having the bass quite so far back in the mix, but it's actually still more prominent than the original (this is supposed to showcase the bass, after all :) ).

The video side of it was another thing altogether. This is my first time shooting a video with something other than my ipad, and I know even less about video editors than I do about DAWs. I'm not super crazy with the quality of the video, but I just bought the editing software this morning! I spent most of the day just trying to figure out how to import my video files!

Well, I think it's pretty good for my first attempt. I hope you all enjoy it!

Well, it seems that link only works for me. I'm uploading the video to Daily Motion right now, and will hopefully have a viewable video up soon.

Cool deal, I love that song. Been playing around with the guitar part(s) in my own way for a while now. Look forward to hearing your bass take on it!

Well here it is!

I started a Bitchute account instead... I didn't like the look of Daily Motion. It doesn't look like they give you a lot of control of your content once it's been uploaded. But Bitchute takes a long ass time to process a video. This is only three minutes long, and it took about two and a half hours before it was available.

Finally! It sounded great, Ed Mossman , and you seemed to play it effortlessly. I enjoyed watching and listening - I guess there´s a mistery with us guitar/bass players, that looking at the fretting hand is like a musician´s curse, you just can´t help it -.

Hoping there are more to come.

Thumbs up!

Haha... Thanks Sabas, but if it looks effortless, that's probably just because I've played it about 1000 times. But it still takes 100% of my concentration in terms of timing and feel. Some of those runs are kinda tricky... Especially the turn-around right before the "chorus".

I do have some other songs I was planning to do videos of, now that I'm starting to get comfortable with recording.

BTW, how do you think the mix sounds compared to the first version? Granted I used a generic backing track for that, but I think the bass doesn't sound as "tacked on" in this version. I expected it to stand out even more when playing with the real recording, but I found it easier to blend it in... at least to my ears, anyway.

This sounds better, well mixed. It has the right presence. Bass tracks should be well in front of the mix - balanced, yes, but not behind the other instruments -, or at least, that´s how I like it.

I´m glad I had some free time so I could listen to this without a hurry, and to see a little of what´s new here in AGF.

BTW, the pre count at the beginning, you recorded it with your phone, or is it a video camera, or a mic?

And what´s the video software you used? My son uses Videopad - free to use it at home, and has lots of options -.

The count-in was at the beginning of the guitar track (that's George Harrison speaking, not me), and I just decided to keep it in. I guess I involuntarily mouthed the words when I recorded the video. :)

I recorded the video with an actual video camera. I'm actually spoiled for choices when it comes to video recording. I have another camera and a cell phone that can shoot 4k, as well as my iPad and a couple of old cell phones. The only real reason I used that camera was because I've barely used it since I bought it a couple of years ago, and I think 4k is over-kill for this sort of thing (I don't even have anything that can display 4k!). I recorded it in 1080p, but I think the resolution got stepped down to 720 when I uploaded it. It looks a lot sharper when viewed on my computer with a media player than it does on YouTube/Bitchute.

The video editor I used is called: "HitFilm". It's a full-featured, pro-grade editor, and it only cost $30 for a life-time license. I decided to buy it because no free editor could use the type of files my cameras output (AVCHD). It turns out I still had to get a file converter, though, because while software can read and load those files, the playback was really choppy in the editor. This is a problem for ALL video editors with this file format, apparently. Kinda odd, since this is the native format for Sony, Canon and Panasonic cameras, you'd think there would be more support for it.

Correction: HitFilm was only $19, not $30 (I had a feeling there was something wrong with that figure when I said that), and I didn't have time to mention that the Starter version is free, or rather, you can choose to pay nothing for it, but they ask for a donation of $9. I got the next package up at $19, and they also have another version with the full VFX suite for $29. I don't plan on doing much visual effects, so I went with the middle option. They donate a percentage of the proceeds to charity too.

Nicely done! Sounded fantastic. And I'm always amazed at how great a bass player Sir Paul is...he never seems to get any credit, but his playing (and writing) are top notch!

That was great @mossman. Though I'm so familiar with that song it was almost like hearing the bass part fresh for the first time. Paul is one of my favorite bass players. He did same fantastic bass parts on the Wings stuff with the Rickenbacker.

Thanks guys. I really put a lot of work into this song, both terms of playing it as accurately as possible, as well as recording it, and getting the tone just right... At least I hope I got it right. Based on your comments, I'm guessing that I did. :)

McCartney gets a lot of general recognition as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, but he doesn't get enough recognition for his bass playing. Among bassists he does, because we're the guys who actually listen to, and learn his bass parts, but I don't think the general public has ever really heard his bass playing (at least not on a conscious level). It was common practice to bury the bass track in the mix back in those days. They were afraid that if the bass were too loud, it would make the needle jump out of the groove and it would eat up too much band-width for the other frequencies. The band knew that wasn't a valid concern (because they were avid Motown fans), and constantly lobbied to have the bass more forward in the mix, but EMI was run like a machine with strict rules and policies, as well as dire consequences for those who violated them, so the settings stayed the way they were.

By the mid '60s the Beatles had a little more leverage in the studio (thanks to putting millions of pounds into EMI's coffers), and bass levels started coming up, but I think they could have gone further (Motown still had more bass than the Beatles). When I recorded this, my goal was to emulate the mix of the original as closely as possible, to where a casual listener wouldn't notice that the bass track had been replaced, but I just couldn't bring myself to drop the bass quite as far back in the mix as the original. I still think it could be a little louder, but it gets to the point where the bass track sounds too "slapped on".

Paul really is a phenomenal bassist. Even the early stuff was pretty busy and far removed from the traditional "roots-n-fifths" role of the instrument up to that point. I have no idea how he sang and played a lot of those bass lines at the same time! His bass parts are so melodic, and he's a master at counter-point... and it seems so effortless and fluid... I don't think he struggled too much over writing his bass parts. They just came right out of him when it was time to record the bass track (which was always the last track to be recorded - George Harrison hated that). His groove is unlike any other bassist. That's part of what made this song so difficult to learn. Just getting used to his sense of time and all the unexpected things he does in the course of a song is a challenge in itself. He zigs when you would have zagged! And it gets increasingly more complex as the song goes, and he never plays anything the same way twice. It makes you think on your feet!

That. Was. Amazing. This whole post is as well.

We'll have to start a new topic on shooting/editing video. I don't want to hijack this one because of the awesome content and effort you put into it.

Strong work.

Thanks Tom! And please feel free to "hijack" this thread. I was planning on going into more detail about the process that went into this (as it's been quite a journey), but I've been pretty busy this week and haven't had much time for posting.
