I bought another Dean Schenker V :-) this time it's the 'retro' model which differs from my current one by having a stopbar instead of the V plate, '69 style pickguard, and it doesn't have DiMarzios but a Dean Lights Out and DMT in it.

But it has a set neck as well, same V shape too.

Trouble is, the neck is broken. I got it for 100€ including shipping, though, and I'm hoping I can repair the neck. If not, I'll use the body and parts and build something out of it...still worth the hundred IMO, but I'm really hoping I CAN repair the neck.

Pics later and report on how it goes. Already got some plans for mods too, provided I can repair it OK.

That makes it 4 V's in total in my 'stable'. I could sell all other guitars really, don't need 'em any more.

This is how it should look fixed...

Looking forward to the repair thread.

This should be interesting. Looking forward to more details about where exactly the break is. As long as the fretboard didn't need to be replaced, and it was only something like a broke off headstock, or even a serious crack on an otherwise attached neck, I think I'd take on the challenge for 100€.

The break is very neat, almost perfect...just a touch of black paint missing, otherwise should be easy to fix.
Overall, it should clean up fine....but boy I feel for the guitar, I mean I don't treat my axes too gently but no axe deserves to be treated THIS nasty....

Started repairing...getting some Titebond into the crack and now it's clamped tight. Trussrod works fine. Will return to it after 24 hours...

OMG warn a fella before you show someone getting jabbed with a needle :)

You glued and clamped it well, it'll hold.

Any plans on the paint?

Yeah, it has a good chance of holding just fine I think...rather clean a break

I don't think I'll repaint it....much of the damage is really just stains and dirt that should buff off okay. Just touch up a bit here and there, I'll let it carry its scars proudly Image it's gonna be a player not a wallflower.

What I will do is change the pickguard somehow. It's too vivid as it is, so I'm thinking I'll put in a clear pickguard so it'll just show the color through. There's only a small control cavity I can cover easily, no routing for pickups etc.

Can't wait to clean it up and level the frets and start to polish and rebuild tomorrow. The pickguard will be the biggest work, I'll have to carve it out of plastic by hand, hopefully I can manage okay.

Right, now it's been clamped 12 hours plus, tonight I'll start working more on it.

Already noticed it cleaned up nice with some detergent and a credit card - a lot of the damage was really just some sort of dirt on it, almost like chewing gum, just stuck here and there. There's a few spots where the paint is gone but they're very small...I will jut touch them up with model colors and buff it out with automotive products and a power buffer, and I bet you won't see any issues from a few feet off after that.

The crack I don't know yet how nicely it can be repaired. May have to sand it down a wee bit, we'll see how snugly it sets.

Sweet looking axe! Good luck with the repair. It looks like it is coming along well! I am currently waiting on my first V which is backordered. I already bought a Well-Hung strap for it. Either way i cant wait to see what yours will look like when it is risen from the ashes!

There's usually something real special with a guitar that's brought back to life and I'm guessing that one will be as well. My good friend broke the headstock off on his Gibson 335 and after the repair that thing was awesome.

It's done! Turned out fine. Just have to do some additional setup adjustments and check the intonation, but it's already quite OK.
Had to sand the neck down to make it nice.

Schenker is my hero. I've played the retro a few times and every time rock bottom just falls out of it for me. Like it auto plays. Had a chance to buy a factory 2nd new one for just over $200. It was just too intimidating to be compared to schenker so I didnt get it. I'm so irritated w myself.
Enjoy it. I think those lights out pickups were very good ceramics. From memory possibly very much like my al2000 that sounds so nice

Funny thing is, I never really listened to any Schenker myself. Know the name, but could not name a single song or album. I understand he started out in Scorpions, and that I've heard some, but never was a fan of either. So he's completely obscure for me as a guitarist, hence I've got no ballast like that

I went for these models purely for color, and because I got them ridiculously cheap. Only afterwards I've learned they're also astonishingly good value even at original prices...never had a dean before, but the Epi there is circa 600 value usually, and the Deans are better guitars really. I think I'll keep an eye for Deans from now on.

Yeah some Deans are definitely solid guitars, they just get a bad rep as a company so people think they all suck which is totally untrue. Schenker is a legendary player, I've seen him multiple times over the last couple of years and he is playing better than ever...just jawdropping performances every time. Played a couple of these import Schenker Vs over the years and minus the lowest end ones they're all very solid axes. I do most of my Schenker-ing on my Randy Rhoads Polka Dot V (pawn shop score for a measly $230):

Maybe checkout ufo strangers in the night. Considered one of the best live albums of all time. With the music you do I thought you might really like this. I was looking for a good sample. 39 min gave me goosebumps, the outro solo on lights out and then rock bottom solo at 44min.
