Re: Favorite Beer poll
Any homebrewers around? Some of these folks make stunning stuff - used to hang out on a HB forum, and our local meets - five all-grain kettles going at the same time in the yard, sampling previous brews, busy day! Back to the thread: I try to drink local, even though some stray form the classics and...

Re: Computer stuff: Low-grade NVMe SSDs?
Yes... and no. Newegg, is a bit like Amazon, many outside vendors, some questionable merchandise sources. No. Anyway, I found that a comparable as stock grade Western Digital SSD, inexpensive as is. I also learned a few tibits about SSDs form WD Support, like Pyrite versus Opal security bits, Gen. 3...

Computer stuff: Low-grade NVMe SSDs?
A Dell laptop I bought last year seems to have this SSD onboard: SN740 NVMe, WD 512GB Don't care much for Win11, and looking into swapping stock SSD with fresh one, to go Linux install. This is a low-usage machine, nothing exotic, so this new SSD does not need performance. What are, or make low-cost...

Re: Its almost garden time
I am a zero with vegetables, but doing allright with flowers. The dining room has over-wintering geraniums that I grew from seeds (slow!), same with begonias. All on the deck - I have voles in the front yard, only place with full sun, so forget it! I figure they need to live somewhere. And occasiona...

Re: I have COVID. Happy New Year
You know there must be something to that "vitamin D" sunshine thing. Back in NJ, I used to get a couple of nasty colds every year,... Since moving to Southeast Asia, I have not had a cold or any respiratory illness in 8 years Back in my international crowd in Geneva, when a friend's girlf...

Re: I have COVID. Happy New Year
You all get well.
Friend has a tradition of daytime New Year's Day party, good food, etc.
He was a bit sick, postponed to this coming weekend, then he tested positive for COVID.
Still has the party on, which is not like him, a pretty measured guy.
I am not going. We can visit separately later.

I also got a bottle of Tanqueray. It was a good year. Grand Marnier, here. A tidy amount in margaritas. It tastes quite nice and smooth sipped. I was also given this beauty (not my photos, same machine, though): https://vintage-photo.nl/no-3a-autographic-kodak-special-review/?utm_source=pocket_reader

Yep, this is a nice little corner store on the net, the regulars, some harmless freaks showing up occasionally, neighborhood gossip, cheap candy and beer. A nice place to go when it's cold outside.

Re: Odd topic: morphing a laptop inot a desktop
Yes, like Tommy's except that I found a free 24" monitor! It seems to work on the test setup - I wrote a Linux version on the original drive, which tests as "pre-fail", so, next is get a 500GB SSD and write the full intended install. The power button is on the side of the machine, but...

Re: Odd topic: morphing a laptop inot a desktop
Update and closure: I blew the sick Windows install, wrote Linux Mint XFCE over, made the appropriate choices in display options, closed the lid 7/8 of the way. It works as is, for today. (there were some prior disk errors on this older HHD, so this is test before SSD install sorts) Next is try with...

Re: Odd topic: morphing a laptop inot a desktop
You might have problems just using the external video output, as it kinda depends on what Windows thinks. But your idea of using a docking station is the way to go, as that is interpreted by Windows as you wanting to use that laptop like a desktop. It is an older lappy, circa 2015, so it only has &...

Odd topic: morphing a laptop inot a desktop
Spouse's beaten up laptop (she breaks stuff!) is barely usable as is, hinges busted, wifi weak, etc. Goal: make it into a desktop. - will video output without its display and lid work with just external monitor? - Same with power switching-when-lid-down function Possible cheap cheat: use a docking t...

Re: Armistice Day
Each army corps kept a journal to record daily movements and such. Here is a digitized one, belonging to a French unit. Handwritten, in French, not for everyone, but this is an actual document that was on the war path itself: https://www.memoiredeshommes.sga.defense.gouv.fr/fr/arkotheque/visionneuse...

^^^ nice. A bit Ancient-Greece in flavor.
Bonus: that would also put arm dealers out of business.
In jest: I would suggest keeping the Olympic Committee, FIFA, and FIA away from this!

Armistice Day
So Veterans Day is also known as Armistice Day, the day the WWI meat grinder stopped. In my native France, just about every village center has a monument listing villagers lost to war. With my genealogy look ups, I discovered that a great uncle died of war wounds in Limoges, then a main war hospital...

I stayed away from guitars into the pandemic, and picked up still film photography, by chance. I got a junked air fryer at the local reuse/recycle. These are tabletop super-convection ovens!
Sadly, my unit works well(?) BUT has a very poor tray design, so I have to be careful handling it.
Looking for recipes you like, BTW

Xavier Lynn, Altanta guitar player?
Anybody heard or heard of Xavier Lynn, out of Atlanta, I believe? I watched him play with the Jon Cleary band this weekend, at the Crescent City Blues Festival in New Orleans, this weekend. Young dude, very interesting style and sound. The festival was live-streamed by community radio WWOZ. Some bit...
