Finally got around to replacing the cheapy tuning machines on my taxi tribute guitar with some Grovers. One of the nice things about a guitar with a lot of wear on it is that you don't care too much if your work is neat!

Re: New GC direction
This is very timely! Last weekend, Primus were left without their instruments after all their gear got delayed in transit due to storms. Fortunately, they were still able to play their set at the Sick New World Festival after a local Guitar Center kitted them with new gear. https://www.guitarw...

Re: New GC direction
As far as "why would you buy anything from GC", when I was looking for a new amp, I wanted to actually try it out first. If GC had had something decent that I liked, I absolutely would have bought from them (assuming the price wasn't stupid). Unfortunately for them, their selection was cra...

Re: New GC direction
I guess I'm confused and pardon me because I haven't been to GC in about 10 years. But didn't they always have a 'high end' room where you could play and test some higher end stuff off the floor, usually only reserved for 'serious' buyers ? The closest GC to me doesn't have a room like that. There'...

Re: Whats your' latest gear acquisition?
Got this the other day for cheap, a Critter Electronics "American Fuzz", because it was listed as B-stock, I think because the finish isn't awesome. I traditionally haven't been a big fuzz guy, but the guy behind Critter Electronics seems pretty cool and I figured it was worth a shot to su...

Re: sx hawk mahogany p90
you can always snatch out the p90 stock pick guard and sell it for 85 shipped on ebay and replace with single coils. Unless the tremolo version is very different from the hardtail version (and I don't think it is) single coils are not going to be a drop-in replacement...the routing of the body is v...

Re: Craigslist vs Facebook Marketplace
Something dysfunctional about FBM searches, like it was designed to be so on purpose.... :-) And lots of junk, bikes with missing docs or keys, clapped on Chinese scooters. I have long found FB marketplace's actual user interface to be some hot garbage. The people there are pretty much the same as ...

Re: Craigslist vs Facebook Marketplace
I just put a piece of furniture up on Freecycle, and I got precisely one response, which was a guy saying, "I love it but it's too big for my apartment! Do you have any other furniture available?"

Re: How do you listen to music these days?
I'm a fan of Rick Beato (youtuber) and he opined that the streaming services are bad for music in that you listen to something and your put into an algorithm and then silo'd into that style/genre of music. You never/rarely get exposed to anything new outside of your genre because of the algorithms....

Re: How do you listen to music these days?
I have to admit that Spotify pretty much owns me. But what can I do? It's like the world's biggest music store, for a very reasonable price. On the rare occasions I'm exposed to radio, my reaction is usually, "Huh, radio is still a thing?" Sirius/XM sound pretty cool, but I have pretty muc...

Re: FireBirds
I've got an Epi Firebird, and I find it plenty comfortable to play sitting down. The very thin body actually helps in this regard, IMO. I am also 5'8", and I agree that the FB somehow "feels bigger than it is", but nothing unmanageable. (Try playing a Thunderbird for comparison!) Inte...

Re: ShortWave Radio
About 30 years ago, I found an old cabinet radio on the street, dragged it home, and used it to listen to shortwave. It was kind of magical thinking that there's all of this stuff just floating through the ether around us that most people are never even aware of! I wonder if the internet has decreas...

Re: Whats your' latest gear acquisition?
This is kind of silly, but perhaps one of my more useful gear acquisitions lately. Anybody who plays bars knows that it tends to involve a lot of rummaging around on dark stages trying to set things up. So when I was at the pharmacy the other day and saw one of these in a promo bin I had to grab it ...

Re: What song are you obsessed with right now?
This song is ridiculous ear-worm-y, even though I can't understand any of the lyrics. (They're in Finnish, of which I speak about four words. Apparently the title translates to "Iron Man Is Rusting".)

Re: NAD! Orange OR15
First gig report: it sounded really good. I was a bit surprised that I had to turn it up about halfway with the wattage switch in 15-watt mode! It was definitely a loud gig, I'll say, and we were miked up. The only minor gripe I have is that the effects loop seems to introduce a fair amount of noise...

I had a little trouble thinking of one, because I'm not a big country guy. But then this came up in my Spotify library - "All I Want To Do Is Play Cards" by Corb Lund!

NAD! Orange OR15
New amp (and pedal!) day! I decided to make bug one of Sweetwater's salespeople since they're always bugging me  and talked to one of them for a good long while and threw out some ideas. Based on what I was saying, he recommended the Orange OR15. It's not one of the ones that originally mad...

Re: Marshall Origins
Very interesting! I remember that one of my gripes about the Origin 20 was that it was very vintage, for better or worse - you didn't get much overdrive out of it unless you completely dimed both preamp and master volume. Sounds like this mod might change that.

Re: Did You Ever Play A Song Wrong?
Something that came up just in the last day or so: My band is covering "Rockin' in the Free World". A pretty simple song, right? Did you realize that the bass does not follow the chord changes in the intro/theme, but does in the verse?* That's the kind of thing that's easy to overlook, and...

Re: Did You Ever Play A Song Wrong?
Undoubtedly I've played a ton of stuff wrong! It's hard to hear everything in a recording, there's a lot of misinformation on the internet, and even some "professional" transcriptions are wrong. What I've learned, though, is two things. Firstly, that people mostly don't care if you're play...

RIP Wayne Kramer
Wayne Kramer, guitarist for the MC5 (and others, such as Was (Not Was) for a while) passed away the other day at the age of 75. If you're not familiar with Kramer and the MC5, definitely check him out...he was way ahead of his time, an early pioneer of the Detroit punk scene. And the MC5 were one of...

Re: Illegal to work on your own electronics in Nordic countries?
Having said all that, the headlights in new vehicles are amazing from a drivers perspective. We also got a 2023 Mazda CX9 for my wife and it has headlights that turn as you steer. I'm sure it's stupid expensive to replace but it's a very cool and useful feature. Preston Tucker is smirking from his ...

Illegal to work on your own electronics in Nordic countries?
I ran across this weird claim in a Victory amplifier manual. Anybody ever heard of this claim before, or know what the law actually covers? I couldn't find anything about it. In certain countries, (specifically, Nordic countries), is it totally forbidden to open up any electronic equipment or to wor...

PRS re-invents the tuner?
So PRS says that "anything that touches the strings is God" and is releasing a new tuner design that is supposed to...be better? Apparently they're lighter, which is good, but there's also some talk about how they "open up the vowel sound of the guitar" and make "the whole g...
