Re: Chinese Company Buys Marshall For $1 BILLION!
I love a good Marshall. They're certainly not all perfect, but a JCM800 is one of those rare (IMO) amps where just turning every single knob up to 10 gets you a glorious tone. Also a very loud tone, to be sure.

Jeff Beck on Strats: “What makes you think they stay in tune?”
Gotta love Jeff Beck...Guitar Player asked him how he kept his Strats in tune, what with all of his whammy bar work, and he said, "What makes you think they stay in tune?" I'm not trying to bag on Fender and the synchronized tremolo again, but it's pretty amusing that even Jeff Beck admitt...

It's kind of weird that it almost seemed to be colder in parts of the South than it did up north.
Here in NYC, it's currently 15 F, "feels like 6". But then, NYC is a heat island: I see on the Weather Underground map that you don't have to go too far away to find temperatures below zero.

Re: Well, that's different... (the Verso Sine guitar)
I don't want to come across as too negative. We should remember that the solid body electric guitar met with a lot of resistance from traditionalists ("That's not what guitars look like!") and even the Stratocaster had its detractors ("The neck is attached with screws? That's not how ...

Re: For a bluegrass band?
I know I've mentioned before how often I've seen guitarists with huge pedalboards that you can't even tell they're using, but that really takes the cake. I will offer some possible justifications, though. For one thing, even my minimal pedalboard has some "if" pedals. For example, if I'm g...

The difference between the cheap ones and the expensive ones may be nitro-safeness. I have no definite idea of course, but I thought Proline hangers were good and they were *not* nitro-safe.

I also have no means to test it, so would be 'as seen' so to speak. If you have an instrument amplifier - any kind of instrument amplifier will do for this test - you can plug an instrument cable into the amplifier, then clip the red wire to the "tip" of the cable and the white wire to th...

Re: Small dent/scratch repair for guitar finish?
Follow-up: I got one of the Duplicolor scratch fix pens, in "universal black". So far I have tried it on one of my lesser guitars, as a learning experience, before I try it on the Fender. One of my other guitars, also black, had a bit of a scratch, so I tried out the pen. Firstly, Duplicol...

I was sure this story was going to end either
"...and that's how I ended up married to a Playboy model"
or
"...and that's how I woke up in a hotel bathtub full of ice without my kidneys."
Still could, I guess.

I can't believe I forgot this one for so long! A European explorer is travelling through central Africa with his native guide. They're paddling their raft down a slow-moving, murky river, with dark jungle pressing in on each side. In the distance, they begin to hear drums, slow but insistent. "...

Re: Playing guitar in December
The early part of December is normal enough for me, but in the second half, my band is pretty much all out of town. I have a lot of free time, but my wife also has an extended break in late December/early January, so we'll see how much guitar time I get in!

Dang. That tremolo pedal I'd been looking at (the Choka) is down to $29, which is almost half price. The deals seem a little uneven (some things don't seem to be marked down at all) but where they are, they can be amazing.

Cool post on the development & design of the Nobels ODR-1
Kai Nordland has a pretty cool post about the history and design of the Nobels ODR-1, in which he goes into a lot of detail about specific choices and the circuitry.

(told to me by my band's bassist!) This young band gets their first big break - they get to open for a really big, famous band at a huge stadium show. The stadium is packed, and the band is rocking out, really trying to give it their all and impress the audience. The lead singer is thinking, "T...

Re: Whats on your work bench?
The early 4001's and the 4002's had a thumb rest, but the latter was cumbersome because of the horseshoe magnet bridge pickup. Just like the Gibson Thunderbird bass, many players use a pick. Oddly enough I find my Thunderbird fairly easy to play fingerstyle - the Tbird pickup is larger and squarer ...

How many lead singers does it take to change a light bulb? Just one - he holds on and lets the world revolve around him. How many guitarists does it take to change a light bulb? Thirteen - one to actually do it, and twelve more to stand around and say, "Yeah, he's fine, I guess, I mean, I could...

Re: Whats on your work bench?
The Rickenbacker 4003 is notoriously awkward to play fingerstyle, due to a lack of good places to anchor your hand. The neck pickup is too small and curved, the edge of the pickguard is too thin, the bridge pickup cover is clumsy, etc. So I got a Zero Mod thumbrest and attached it today. It blends i...

Re: IYV ILS-300 EGR (LES PAUL COPY)
I have never been completely happy with the tone of my Gibson Les Paul Standard 60s. I have swapped in numerous different sets of pickups, but the guitar still has a thinness that I can't correct. To be honest, I bought this guitar because it had the most beautiful unburst flame top I'd ever seen. ...

Got mine today. It contains:
- a Fender-branded guitar strap
- a set of SIT strings in 10-46
- an "Option Knob", which apparently is kind of a big butterfly knob you can put on a pedal so you can adjust a setting with your foot
- a Stew-Mac "Ultimate Shine Guitar Care System"

Re: IYV ILS-300 EGR (LES PAUL COPY)
A weird thing about the IYV LP copies is that the great majority of the ones on the market seem to be green. I wonder why that is. The company president really liked green guitars? Green stain was especially cheap that month? People are hanging on to all the others so only the green ones are availab...
