Re: Do you rely on a pedal or your amp for crunch? (TUBE AMPS - LIVE setting)

I’ve got three amps: two tube, one solid state, and the approach with each varies depending on what I’m playing and where I’m playing. Peavey Classic 50 is two channels with a MV, but I’ll use pedal as a lead boost. Mesa DC3: I mostly use it as a single channel amp because the Lead channel a Lead ch...

Re: I Think I’ve Turned Into a “Strat Guy”

I had never heard of the guitarist/artist that spec'd my Sig series Strat but I couldn't have done a better job myself! I don't think if I had bought a David Gilmour Strat, my personal guitar hero, that I would find so much of myself in it as I do from the one I bought. Funny how things work out. C...

Re: I Think I’ve Turned Into a “Strat Guy”

I’ve been a Les Paul guy, a SuperStrat guy, a PRS guy, and I have good examples of each, but my current favorite is my MIM Ed O’Brien Strat. I thought I’d have to work around the fat neck, but I don’t even notice it now. I do notice that some of my other guitars have thin necks though. I’d worried ...

Re: Quilter Overdrive 200

Eminence EM12N may be too clean? The EM12N is a strong candidate! A funny thing happened last weekend. When I finally had time to install a speaker in the cab, I pulled out the Celestion V30 I swapped out of my Mesa, and I pulled out the Eminence Jet City that I really didn't like in my Jet City 20...

Re: Quilter Overdrive 200

I ordered a cabinet from Guitar Cabinets Direct. It’s a Marshall 1936-style 112. Deep cabinet, heavy duty construction and I’m going to install a lightweight neodymium magnet speaker, either an Eminence EM12N, BN12-300S or a Celestion Copperback. Any of the neo speakers will keep the cab under 30 po...

Re: Randall RG80es

I played a 150 watt head at a San Ash in Nashville. RG1500H I think? It was better than I expected. Way better. They’re marketed and seen as high-gain amps, but I found that while they will definitely do that trick, they’ll also do anything else you want also. It was an early contender when I was lo...

Re: Quilter Overdrive 200

Head arrived on Monday, picked it up from the post office yesterday. Played it through my Mesa DC3’s speaker. It’s an amp. Played my Standard 24 with DiMarzios. It’s a good pairing, but I am looking forward to trying my Strat through it. I only had a few minutes, but there are some decent tones in t...

Re: I Think I’ve Turned Into a “Strat Guy”

I've tried and will probably continue to try Strats out. I've had 6 or 7, a couple of really nice ones too. I just can't seem.to bond with them. The next one, I'll remove the top volume knob and give that a spin. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk I think it was mostly me coming around to Strat...

Re: Quilter Overdrive 200

@supersoldier71 I'm not very knowledgeable about speakers. Where does one find these db readings for speakers? Right now I'm tempted to get one of these super lightweight 2X8 Quilter cabs but they're admittedly pricey. The most reliable place to find them is on the manufacturer's site. Here's the p...

Re: Quilter Overdrive 200

ok I'm confused on the less efficient speaker unless you want maybe some speaker distortion vs amp or pedal distortion . but I keep mine pretty clean other tan maybe a little reverb or light delay or trem.usually just 1 . I find less efficient speakers to be more forgiving. The Blue Marvels in my P...

Re: Quilter Overdrive 200

From a quick glance at the manual, they suggest keeping wattage turned to no more than max rating of the speaker you choose, makes sense it;s simple. I'd say a texas heat would make you wear hearing protection before you got near 150 watts Good point. My WGS Retro 30 is like 99.6 dB or something, a...

Quilter Overdrive 200

I just scored a decent price on Reverb. It’ll be my first head, and certainly my first SS head. FWIW, it was a toss up between the OD200 and a JC-40 because portability was the main thing. Doesn’t matter now, because before I can think about a JC-40, I’ve got to figure out a cab solution for this th...

Re: I Think I’ve Turned Into a “Strat Guy”

For now, my favorite strat pickups are single coils with low-medium winds ranging from about 5.5-6.7. Very much preferring a scatterwound coil (I imagine this can vary a lot between winders personal technique) vs neat machine guided windings. Am finding big clearer separation of strings. Plenty bri...

Re: I Think I’ve Turned Into a “Strat Guy”

My guitar teacher swore by them. I have one and really like it. Has a slender neck though, but is extremely playable. And...one of the “three pickup guitars” where the middle pickup doesn’t get in my way. I lower the middle pickup so the bass side is flush with the guard and never gets in my way. I...

Re: PRS SE General Observations

My SE Custom 24 Floyd was a revelation. When I bought it, it was the best guitar I owned and maybe the best I’d ever played. Five years later, my neck carve preferences have changed a bit, so I prefer my Strat’s 10/56 or S2 Standard 24’s Pattern (Regular) profiles to the SE’s Pattern Thin. But the S...
